CarolLD
Greetings! I am trying to find out if anyone has homeschooled a child with autism who went to college (or knows someone who has). If so, please contact me; I would like to talk to you. I have a son who has ASD, and I have homeschooled him since he was in third grade; he will be graduating in May. I also have a neurotypical daughter who is in high school.
thescrappyhomeschooler
Well, I have a son was diagnosed with Asperger's back when they still called it that, but he's only in 8th grade. I do foresee him going to college. My husband's cousin has a son who has much more severe autistic symptoms than my son, and he managed to get through R.I.T. and graduate and is now working full-time, I believe as an IT guy. He was not homeschooled, but his mother was very actively engaged in getting him through school. So, I don't have the personal experience, yet, but wanted to let you know that it can be done.
Guest
Know this isn't the personal contact you were looking for, but I bookmarked this new NYTimes piece this morning: "Along the Autism Spectrum, a Path Through Campus Life" http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/20/health/autism-spectrum-college.html
J in OKC
I have a son who was diagnosed with Aspergers in 3rd grade. He was homeschooled K-12th and is currently a freshman in college (Computer Engineering program). During his Junior and Senior years in high school he went to our local Tech school in their Pre-Engineering program for area high schoolers. That was a great way to ease him into what college life would be like. He is very high functioning (most would probably just think he was quirky but not consider him on the spectrum). Let me know if I can help in any way.
