CarolLD
Greetings! I am trying to find out if anyone has homeschooled a child with autism who went to college (or knows someone who has). If so, please contact me; I would like to talk to you. I have a son who has ASD, and I have homeschooled him since he was in third grade; he will be graduating in May. I also have a neurotypical daughter who is in high school.
Code Lyoko
I just posted on your intro page asking you to come here and you were already here! LOL You are fast. :) I don't have a specific response but I do believe there are others who have children with Autism who attended college that post here from time to time. Hopefully, they will respond. In the meantime, it might help the responses to fit your specific needs if you were to post more detailed questions? Are you looking for advice on how an autistic person can get into college? Or what resources a college should have for an autistic person? Or stories of autistic people who successfully navigated through college or at least are currently in college doing well? Or specific colleges that are autistic friendly? Hoping someone can help you very soon. Welcome to the LC board.
CarolLD
Actually, my son does want to go to college (and study aerospace or aeronautical engineering). However, I am also trying to do a study on the experiences these students have so I can potentially help these students adjust to college while helping parents better prepare their children with autism for college. 8filltheheart
If you are seeking information about the adjustments these students have in college, you would be far better off contacting the many universities that have programs specifically geared toward helping autistic kids succeed. They have done extensive research and have programs in place for students. One that we investigated was WKU Kelly Autism Program https://www.wku.edu/kellyautismprogram/collegeandcircleofsupport.php Here is a link with a list of numerous programs: http://www.collegeautismspectrum.com/collegeprograms.html
J in OKC
I think I just posted on another post you made. If this is not the same person...just wanted to say that I have a Freshman in college that was diagnosed with Aspergers when he was in 3rd grade. He was homeschooled K-12th, with the exception that he attended our local Tech school with other Junior and Senior High School students in their Pre-Engineering program. He currently lives at home and drives to school until we are satisfied that he is ready to be totally on his own. Let me know if I can help in any way.
