mamiof5
Dd lost her fish. Lost as in dead ( pretty sure by now), and as in can't find the fish. She has looked EVERYWHERE. Behind her dresser, in her drawers, in her bag/purse (in case he jumped in there), she has looked all over... can't find it. My theory is that somehow it jumped out (the area where it could is not that big), it landed on some pile and she tossed it in the garbage without noticing. I won't tell her that the idea of a spider being in her room and eating it (after it jumped out of the tank) has crossed my mind. Ugh!!! How can we lose a fish???? SparklyUnicorn
Wow. Could it be hiding behind something in the tank? Or buried in pebbles? They can jump out too though. Sorry about your fish!
Nan in Mass
I,m sorry. We lost one once and never found it. We did find the hampster the next day at the back of the papergoods kitchen cabinet, ensconced in a magnificent nest. Nan

Nan in Mass
Once had a guinea pig who I found hiding in a bunch of wires behind a stereo cabinet. He was ok, but geesh crazy animal! Yikes! Our hamster was sensible at least. And after that, we knew where to look when he escaped. It was still super upsetting because of the cats (they gave away the hiding place) but the nest was nice and safe due to the child latches. MercyA
Are there any ornaments in the fish tank? We once had a fish get stuck under a little ceramic cave while digging for food. The other fish were swimming around in a panic, which is what alerted me to the problem. I was surprised by how concerned they were about the situation! Smart little guys. He was okay. Sometimes when fish die, you'll find them inside tank ornaments or stuck to the filter. :( Edited November 15, 2016 by MercyA
bodiesmom
Was he the only fish in the tank? We've had fellow fish "clean up" dead fish in the past....
ksr5377
We had a fish disappear once when we were out of town for the weekend. We found it several months later deep cleaning t he bedroom, under the back of the large dresser the tank is on.
MyLittleBears
Do you have cats? That could explain a lot.
Tap
We had a fish get stuck inside a large spiral seashell once. Same as your family, we thought he might have jumped out, looked everywhere in the room and couldn't find him. When we went to clean out tank for storage, the smell from inside the shell was a 'dead' giveaway. The shell was about the size of a small child's fist and the fish was a betta. We had looked in the shell during our hunt for him, but he must have crammed himself far up inside that we couldn't see him,
AK_Mom4
we had a small goldfish die and get sucked up against the water filter thing. He was mostly hidden by the rocks near the input.
Excelsior! Academy
I had a beta jump into an unlit jar candle. We searched all morning for said missing fish until he was found petrified. That little guy was the same color as the candle.
cjzimmer1
We lost a fish once too. The opening in the tank was less than an inch square and he was a pretty big fish. Never could figure out what happened. 20 YEARS later when my parents moved out of the house, we moved the bookcase the fish tank had been on and there was my perfectly dehydrated fish. At least I found out what happened.
Familia
Sorry about her fish! I agree that it might be in the filter tubes. Years ago, we put three crawdads from our creek into an aquarium on our first floor, far away from the staircase to the basement. Over the course of the next week, we found each crawdad near the inside basement door that goes into the garage and out to the creek...presumably going home. How did those crawdads get through the house, down the steps and across the basement...ew!
J-rap
It reminds me of when my daughter lost her tonsils! She had her tonsils removed when she was young, and the doctor sent them home with her because she wanted to keep them. Somehow over the next couple of weeks they went missing, and we have never found them. We keep imagining the day we move out, finding her old tonsils behind something!
mamiof5
You all make me feel normal!! I thought we were the only ones who could lose a fish. He did have a small house, she took it out to make sure he wasn't under. She has checked under the pebbles. Also checked the filter, hose etc, but he was too big to fit in those. He wasn't huge, but not tiny either... probably couple inches long at least? He was black, so it'd be easy to spot him on her dresser or carpet. We live in desert area, so I've heard of wolf spiders getting in. Or scorpions. I just won't tell her I've thought about those options or she won't be able to sleep in her room. Her room is on the second floor though... I'd hope critters can't get there as easily?? Ugh. She just wants to find it :P ETA; didn't like all the comments because you also lost your fish, but it's reassuring to read we are not the only ones. I'll let her know it does happen. And forgot to answer some questions... he was the only fish in the tank, we have no cats, we do have a large dog but he doesn't go upstairs. Don't know what type of fish he was, will ask her. Thank you all for helping us with the mystery of the lost fish :( Edited November 15, 2016 by mamiof5
HomeMum
Welp... you'll probably find it within the next few days, as dead fish isn't a great smell. ...unless the dog finds it first.
