What US history textbook would you recommend for the period 1600-1800-ish?

Since you already know you like Hakim, have you looked at the "concise" version of History of US? It condenses the whole set into 4 books.

Otherwise, Exploring American History by McHugh/Montgomery is made for that age. It has a Christian flavor.

I didn't know there was a concise version. Is it still for the middle school ages? Does it leave a lot out to turn it into 'concise'?

It is produced by K12.  You can get it used on Amazon.  I did a comparison and discovered that it really didn't leave a whole lot out.  What is excised is the parts that wander away from the main point.  Many times that material is put into a box instead of having its own chapter or whatever.

The layout of the concise version is also far better than the original.  I can't stand to look at the original (which was a problem when I read the entire thing aloud!).  It is much more restful on the eyes and the pictures are beautiful.

That sounds fantastic! The layout of the other one drove me nuts too. I could deal with my political differences with the author but the constant feeling that the book was yelling 'Squirrel!!' was intolerable to me.

I'll have to check it out.
