Ugh, my silky terrier smells! I bathe her every two days; she looks and smells beautiful for a day, then the next she is ratty and oily and stinky again.

Do I really need to switch to the 50$ per can dog food; cant remember the name right now...

Anything else I need to know? Would probiotics help?

Any other suggestions? Gas mask? Febreeze? :zombie:

Aack!  Too cute!

Oily skin and coat on a dog usually means seborrhea. Often with seborrhea yeast can also be present. The two combined can really cause a stink.

You need a medicated shampoo. You can pick one up from your vet or a pet store, or use something meant for humans. They all have the same active ingredients. Selsun Blue is often recommended.

Seborrhea is often secondary to allergies, but as you can see in the above link there are several things that can cause it. Does she have any other symptoms of allergies -- licking her paws, rubbing her face and ears on rugs and furniture?

If you do think it could be food allergies I'd advise taking stuff out rather than adding anything. I'd switch her to a very limited ingredient commercial food or a home-made diet consisting of one protein source and one carb source. I'd feed nothing but that for a couple of months and if she improved then I'd slowly, one thing at a time, start adding things back in so I'd know what she was reacting to. Variety is the enemy of dogs with unidentified food allergies, and unfortunately the "in" thing for many foods and supplements now seems to be throwing every ingredient you can imagine in them.

But really -- for just oily stinkiness I'd try a medicated shampoo first.

What are you bathing her with? Is she on any fish oil supplements? Too much of them can make the dog smell like fish. But that breed is naturally oily.

I bathe her with a mixture of baby shampoo and Dawn dishwashing detergent. Baby shampoo on the head and face. Vet recommended it but I am open to suggestions.

Ni fish oil or other supplements. She doesnt lick or chew herself, and doesnt rub on the furniture.

I do think I need to change her diet and treat possible seborrhea.

Thanks, everyone. I will try these very helpful suggestions!
