hopskipjump
Most universities require the FAFSA to be sent in every single year, right? DD isn't receiving any finance-related aid from her school, and they haven't sent me anything regarding the FAFSA, so I'm wondering if it's always pretty much required? (Because I don't want to bother filling it out if I don't have to! hahaha!!) (now that I'm thinking about it... I probably need to ask DD, don't I? They might have emailed her about it and she just didn't think to tell me)
Pawz4me
We haven't filled it out every year. We did for the year DS was admitted as a freshman. Just because, even though we knew we wouldn't qualify for any financial aid. Then we didn't for his sophomore year or for this year. We have filled one out for next year since we'll have two in college then.
elegantlion
I'm pretty sure my university requires the FAFSA to qualify for any aid, including scholarships from the university. Some of my scholarships I did not receive until the 2nd or 3rd year of school. I would check with the school as I wouldn't want to cut off the ability to qualify for merit aid in later years. As for notification, because the FAFSA is opening so early, they have put flyers around school and posted a message on our student portal homepage. They will normally do a reminder message after fall semester, but they don't send anything out to parents either via email or mail.
G5052
At DS's school and at the school where he's transferring in 2017-2018, you need the FAFSA for merit aid. For us, it's always worth doing. Initially we thought that DS might not get merit aid this year, and then in late July he got a very generous scholarship. Always worth trying!
Sunshine State Sue
We haven't filled it out every year. We did for the year DS was admitted as a freshman. I did not fill it out sophomore or junior year. The school does not require it for merit scholarships. I am considering filling it out this year because the money we set aside is dwindling and I figure, what the heck, maybe we'll get lucky and he'll be offered subsidized loans instead. Dh turned 65 this year. I hear that can make a difference. The school may send ds some info about FAFSA, but he's never passed it on. Not unusual for him.
