...................
Just a note, since lots of people are still changing out stuff that doesn't work. My daughter is really learning a lot with Duolingo. She knows over 300 words and started last school year. She can catch phrases and her accent is really passable. We are pairing it with Getting Started with Spanish because the Co-op we go to has a very advanced, excellent SPanish teacher for high school and she stresses knowing the grammar as well as conversation. Together, it'll make her transition to high school Spanish smooth and easy. I really recommend it! And it's free. And I use it to brush up on my Spanish and Portuguese :)
Hobbes
Thanks for sharing! That is very encouraging - my DD has been using Duolingo for French this year and is loving it. I'll keep encouraging her toward it!
happypamama
Yep, DD has learned a ton with Duolingo (and GSWS was good for the grammar too), enough that she can often understand basic conversations between native speakers and some signs.
merylvdm
We are big fans too! It's so easy to use. All my 4 children have used it for various languages.

We are using it, but so infrequently (she gains maybe 1 skill a week in addition to keeping the review bar thing filled) I'm not sure it will stick unless we spend more time... 3 ladybugs
Does it teach context now? Last time I used it I was learning a lot of words but I was still using them in the english context. That works sometimes but not always. I would sound like a robot. My son's german class is getting hard enough now that I feel I need to learn German QUICK. I am wondering if I should give it another try. Hmmm....

About halfway through The "skill tree" you really start thinking in Spanish and using whole phrases
