morningcoffee
I'm looking for reviews of BJU world history. We would not be using dvds or distance learning. Also, I have been reading old posts about BJU and someone mentioned they found BJU cultural geography to be a "fact cram". Could BJU world history described the same way? Peaceful Isle
My dd just started BJU world History this year. So far she really likes it, but we have her doing the distance learning online.
Zoo Keeper
I have the 3rd edition, and was originally planning to use it with my high school student this year... BUT ;) it's just too preachy for my taste. It's a nicely designed book, good timelines, photos, maps, etc., but I can't get around all the "Christian worldview" bits. Just. Too. Much. It is a well written book, and many of the student activities are pretty good.
G5052
We used it for several years when I needed an open-and-go approach. I actually used the high school books with my youngest in middle school. For us, it was pretty dry. We used the geography along with Classical Conversation's Challenge A, and it was indeed a fact cram. Then we did World History for 8th. It got the job done, but she's much happier with a local history/lit class where she's with other teens, and the history and lit is integrated. YMMV! morningcoffee
We tried BJU history the beginning of last year. My oldest was in 10th, and doing World History. We thought it would be a more straightforward approach than the lit-based history he had done before. It was basically a "fact cram", and he didn't feel he was getting the depth he had before with the lit-based style history....and it took just as long! After about 7 weeks, we changed back to a lit-based approach, and have been much happier. :) What did you end up using afterwards? TIA! momtofive
Our main problem with lit-based in the past was time. We've loved that method of learning, but my oldest is my methodical reader/worker, so it takes a bit longer. After trying BJU, we are now using Sonlight for history with great success. I can take out, or add in to my hearts content, and find a very happy medium for my ds. We had used HOD before trying BJU, and it was so hard to adjust it to what worked best for my ds. Sonlight is so much more adaptable. Just our experience, of course,......ymmv! ;)
coffeefreak
This is exactly what it was. We did the new DLO class and I would highly recommend spending the money unless you're just REALLY REALLY into World History and alllllllllll the dry facts that pertain. ;) Sometimes they have a $99 sale for their DLO classes around December. You don't get the books, but you can easily find them used. You get the videos for one full year so you'll have plenty of time to finish the course if you decide to go that route. Blessings!
