WWE 2 Questions

I began using WWE 2 with my DS8. He has dysgraphia, however, his reading comprehension is awesome. Since using WWE 2 to learn writing he can't seem to answer the basic questions from the reading selections. I read Aesop's the fox and stork to him 2 times and DS was unable to tell me what the fox served the stork. The moral or lesson in the story drew a blank stare.

If I read a book called Warriors Into the Wild (abt cats) (6-7 grade level) to him, he can list the characters, setting, beg middle end and discuss it.

I don't understand. Has anyone had this problem? Should I make my own reading selection and use the same premise or will it get better as we work through the book?

My son struggled with answering the questions a lot. (It doesn't get better... it gets harder). What I did was have him read along with me instead of just listening. That helped a lot. For the more difficult passages, we might read it through twice before trying to answer questions.

I do think this is more challenging then just having to name the characters, setting, and basic plot. A lot of the questions ask for minute details. (What were two of the eight objects sitting on the shelf?). Even I would have a hard time recalling some of these answers.

The main point of the exercise is for them to learn how to compose complete sentences. The reading comprehension is a good exercise too, but even if you have to help him out with remembering answers, if he can still turn it back to you in a complete sentence, you'll have accomplished the main goal.

What Milknhoney said.

I also want to give you a heads up that dictations are coming.  My kid with dysgraphia just cannot write from dictation.  We ended up finishing out WWE2 last year doing the stories and narrations, skipping all the dictations, and moved to a different program for writing this year.  I'm not saying that your kiddo will have the same struggles as mine -- just sharing our experience.

I am so glad both of you shared your experiences. Dysgraphia is a struggle. I am at odds how to give my bright child a classical education when notebooking and paragraph writing is the expected output. At age 8, I still have some time, this seems like its going to be a long war.

My DD also has solid reading comprehension and is very bright. However, her memory of details can suffer when the interest level is low. We hit that point in WWE3.

About the dictation, I agree with the above warning. I really had to modify how I did them for them to get done. And after finishing WWE3, I just stopped. We now use a dictation - based soelling program but we do it as copywork. I can't fight that battle with dysgraphia. Maybe I'm a wuss.

My DD has an excellent memory, so we boost general knowledge ( of the more classical variety) with various memory work and interesting flashcards, in addition to good books.

Definitely not a wuss and if you are I am in your company because dysgraphia battles are life draining.

I think the reason my DS is having trouble with the comprehension of the reading selections is that he is coming out of PS where the reading was boring, plain and awful. It was scripted to practically spoon feed comprehension. Compared to WWE2 where his brain has to think and apply. So we are going to stick with it for reading practice, narration, and 1 sentence copy work to practice penmanship. The dictation is a not happening because of dysgraphia (thanks for the heads up).
