nature girl Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 (edited) A challenge for you all! I started reading a book to my daughter a couple of years ago, we both thought it was wonderful but then she got a bit scared partway through so we stopped reading. Now I think she's ready for a little more potential danger, and I'd love to find the book again but have a ridiculously awful memory and can hardly remember anything about it. Okay, my completely vague clues...It was about two mice, a brother and sister I think. It starts at Christmastime, and they go to visit a somewhat frightening character...I think he had a magic shop? Or maybe a toy shop? The book had beautifully detailed full-page black and white illustrations. Aaaand...that's all I remember. Any idea what it could be? ETA: It was a reasonably thick chapter book, probably aimed at 6-10 year olds... Edited September 10, 2016 by nature girl Quote
Lori D. Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 (edited) So sorry, I don't know that one. BUT... I'll throw in a very big plug for The Rescuers books by Marjorie Sharp! Nothing like the Disney-fied movies based on these books. The mice have a Prisoner's Aid Society, and they rescue people unfairly imprisoned. Some exciting adventures with some peril and also some great humor, terrific vocabulary and great writing. The series order: - The Rescuers - Miss Bianca - The Turret - Miss Bianca in the Salt Mines - Miss Bianca in the Orient Also good adventures with some peril and mice as main characters: - The Mouse and the Motorcycle (Cleary) - Poppy (Avi) - Basil of Baker Street (Titus) -- Sherlock Holmes mouse And a good one that takes place at Christmas with talking dogs (not mice) -- and again, better/different than the Disney movie version) -- is 101 Dalmatians. Hope you find your original mouse book! Maybe one of these can fill in while you look for it. :) Warmest regards, Lori D. Edited September 11, 2016 by Lori D. 1 Quote
nature girl Posted September 11, 2016 Author Posted September 11, 2016 TumTum and Nutmeg, yes that's it! Thank you so much, I'm excited to pick it up again! (And thank you as always Lori for your suggestions. A couple I'd never heard of, and you're reminding me I have an Audible 101 Dalmations I think DD would love!) 4 Quote
Lori D. Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 I love playing "Name That Book"! I'm usually NOT the one who can come up with the title, but I love to "play" because I hear about all these great books that people are trying to find again. :) 4 Quote

Monica_in_Switzerland Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 I also love the Name That Book threads! I never know the answers, but I've been helped out a few times and I love seeing how few clues a person needs to be able to come up with a title! What an amazing resource WTM brains are! 1 Quote
