Tiramisu Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 My favorite brand was discontinued a year or so ago. I used to get complements on my hair, but no more. Not quite "ewwww" but things like, "Your hair is a lot darker" in a non-complimentary tone. I'm a medium brown and now using something semi-permanent from Sally's. I think I can do better. Any ideas? And my hair is thick and grows very fast. Quote
Guest Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Best hair color I've ever used: https://www.esalon.com/ My hair dresser says she could not do it any better. I think when you sign up you get it for $10 if you find a coupon code and then I believe it's $20 or so for each subsequent shipment. They're super responsive on customer service as well if you want to tweak your color. I've been using it for a year now and have zero complaints. You can change the shipment dates if your hair slows down or speeds up on growth during the year too- it's easy to adjust. The kit comes with the color, a stain protector, a stain remover, instructions and gloves. I find it to be far superior to drug store box color. Quote

J-rap Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I've been happy with L'Oreal Preference. 1 Quote
MerryAtHope Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I like Herbatint (ordered through Vitacost)--no ammonia, alcohol, or parabens. My chemically sensitive husband still can't get too close until I've shampooed, but at least he doesn't have to leave the house. Nice, rich color that lasts. 1 Quote
redsquirrel Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I like wella from Sally's. I have also liked their house brand, Ion. Most hair dye, is made by three companies. Loreal, Wella...and I can't remember the third one. They have different names but they can be very similar across brands that are owned by the same company. They often share the same formulations and ingredients. So, if you find out who owns your now discontinued brand, you might be able to find a closer match by keeping it within the same 'family, so to speak. 2 Quote
Arcadia Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Clarion or L'Oréal works well for me. Whichever happen to be on sale when I feel like coloring my hair. 1 Quote
Joyofsixreboot Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 (edited) I use Nutrisse by Garnier. They have a shade that matches my natural color and is kind to my curly, fragile hair. Edited September 10, 2016 by joyofsix 1 Quote
NoPlaceLikeHome Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 As for your hair being too dark, I would definitely try lighter colors such as dark blonde mixed half and half with light brown color. Or just try the dark blonde color. It is easier to make hair darker if you do not like then to make it lighter. Also, when your grey starts showing again, just do the roots and not all over since your hair will get darker and darker if you keep coloring already colored hair. I found good videos on how to color your roots with a bowl and brush on youtube that were great. lastly, you could be daring and go grey like I did:) Many women rock grey hair! I was sick of doing roots every 4 weeks and was not satisfied that my hair would pick up a red hue despite using colors with ash tone in them. My hair would always look reddish no matter if I went to expensive salons or did myself and I think red tones don't look good on me. it was a long process but now the color is 99% gone and I am happy with it. Plsu the texture of my hair has improved dramatically. 2 Quote
