mirabillis Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 Can I do both? Windows to the World - as we are big fans of IEW and want to continue on their pathway for 9th grade. Then 10th grade for SICC-C... But I want to continue with Literature - as we've used Lightning Lit 7 & 8 the last couple years and really love it. Just enough busywork to keep him busy. And learning a lot. Writing assignments nice in conjunction with IEW writing programs. Excellence in Lit - we are now considering instead of Lightning Lit Amer Hist - as I hear such rave reviews about it. Please someone with experience with any or all weigh in! WttW and EIL or WttW and LL - Am Hist I'm in a total panic - school started today and I'm so behind on my 9th grade planning!!! Quote
MamaSprout Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 (edited) WttW has lit built in if you use the Jill Pike Syllabus (included as a download if you buy from IEW). Adding in a full year of LL and/ or a full year of EiL would be overkill. However, if you teach WttW as written, you would have the equivalent of a semester. You could do WttW first semester, then choose a semester's worth of LL or EiL in the spring. Or do both at half pace. EiL and LL both assume the student can write a lit analysis essay already, though. ETA- using the Jill Pike Syllabus is still not a full 36 week year. You could add in a couple of US literature books to study at the end of the year. HTH Edited September 7, 2016 by elladarcy 1 Quote
Momto6inIN Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 We did WttW slowly over about 6 months and then did 2 units of EiL afterwards. It worked really, really, really well for a nice gentle 9th grade intro course to get my oldest DS used to lit analysis. Then he went on to just pick and choose several units of EiL that went along with his history studies for his 10th grade year, some of them quite challenging, but by then he was ready for it. It's what I plan to do with my next DS too, as soon as I can get him to write a decent academic essay. ;) I agree with elladarcy that doing both at the same time would be overkill, and I wouldn't try EiL without first doing WttW. The writing assignments are good and thought-provoking, but there is no writing instruction included, it assumes you already know how to do lit analysis. 1 Quote
