Disney fastpass question

So, I don't know if they are magic bands.  I am not actually sure what the fastpass actually is.  I know after we bought our tickets I went online and registered for fastpasses, but I thought maybe they were tickets they mailed to us like our park tickets?

eta: We are not staying on site

I found this on the disney website, but it doesn't say how to get the cards.

Q.

How do I use my MagicBand or card when I have a FastPass+ arrival time at an attraction or entertainment experience?

A.

It’s so easy that you’ll think it’s magic!

When you arrive during your scheduled FastPass+ arrival time, all you need to do is proceed to the FASTPASS queue entrance and touch your MagicBand or card to a sensor called a touch point.

That’s it!

Please remember that each member of your party will have to individually touch their MagicBand or card to the touch point, so everyone should be sure to have their MagicBand or card available.

Yes. We stayed offsite and bought our tickets from Undercover Tourist. We didn't get paper tickets. I had them mailed to me and they were plastic like a credit card. We linked them up to the Disney website to make our FP reservations. Each of us wore our ticket on a lanyard and just scanned it at the ride. The reservations are specific to each ticket number. Someone please correct me if this has changed!

We were in WDW the last week of April, on 4 day Park Hopper tickets. We did not buy the MagicBands. I think they were $2.95 for each person. It is more convenient, however...   We were in one of the parks, and DD saw a MagicBand fall off a person walking in front of us. She picked it up and returned it to the person.    That made me glad we hadn't bought them. If you have magicBands, be certain they are on securely...

FWIW I highly recommend photographing or making a paper copy of your tickets with the barcode visible. My sister (somewhat flaky) took our tickets to get a FastPass and left my daughter's ticket in the machine. We didn't notice until the next day when we were leaving for Hollywood Studios. Luckily I had a photocopy and the Disney ticket counter was able to reissue a new ticket.

Thank you, I hadn't even thought of this!  Doing this today!
