SA Homeschooler Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 I'm think about using the Big History Project with my STEM Sophomore. Has anyone used this? I am trying to appeal to his curiosity and love of Science to get him interested in History. Is there a spine that goes with this? 1 Quote
EKS Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 There is the text Big History: Between Nothing and Everything. I would use it with the Big History lectures from the Teaching Company. The stuff on the website is also good--but IMO, it is not worthy of a high school credit. If you want a wonderful book on the history of science (as an alternative to big history or in addition to it), The Upright Thinkers is fantastic. 1 Quote
foxbridgeacademy Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 Following..... The Teaching Company (also called The Great Courses) Big History course is on TGCPlus and I'm considering using it next year for..... History? Science? What would it be listed under? (Leaning toward History). Quote
OnMyOwn Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 (edited) We've done a few modules of the online version and it is interesting, but very light. We're going to finish it, but then follow it up with some world history lectures from The Teaching Company, though probably not The Big History ones. I like that it is giving us a different perspective than what is typically taught in WH, but I'd also like to cover a lot more of what is typically taught in a WH course. Quite a bit of the course is focused on science, but from what I have read, a number of school systems are using it as a WH credit. Edited August 26, 2016 by OnMyOwn 1 Quote
catz Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 My kid did a Big History live co-op class. They were required to have the text from this site, though the teacher used many resources. http://worldhistoryforusall.sdsu.edu/book_announcement.php At home, I paired it with additional more traditional World History related reading and documentaries. He was required to do various essays and projects for class and it was year long. I did assign a WH credit for his work. My kid is more of a STEM (or maybe music/performing arts) kid and I'd be shocked if he wanted to do anything history or politics related. 1 Quote
