charlotteb Posted August 25, 2016 Share Posted August 25, 2016 DD, 13, has a really low vocabulary from being in foster care for the first 7 years of her life. We work on that subject every day, but she struggles with it big time. For the past few years, I have had her doing Apologia's elementary science series. She does ok with it, because I have her take notes and then let her use them for the review. But shes getting too old for the elementary series so I need something else. The normal sequence would be to do Apologia General Science, but I just think it would be way over her head. Even if I had her takes notes, there is a lot of vocabulary in the upper sciences so I don't think she would understand at all. Keeping her in the elementary series is causing trouble because its too childish and she needs to move forward at some time. They are written at a lower reading level, less complex vocabulary, but are written to Middle School and High School students so not babyish. There are usually two levels for most subjects. Foundation level is more basic content with a reading level of 3rd or 4th grade. Alternative has higher level content but is still written at around a 3rd or 4th grade reading level. Besides AGS, which is very nice, you may want to check out Pacemaker, Steck Vaughn, PCI, and others.
