Esse Quam Videri Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 DS10 has long had all signs of being ADHD inattentive but we've just held his hand and made things work. This year we are with a homeschool charter, however, and he has to take several standardized tests. This morning he went in for round one which was 2.5 hours on the computer. His scores were fine (less than they could have been as he's accelerated in math) but he was SO frustrated with trying to focus for that length of time... I'm wondering if a diagnosis (and very occasional medication) might be in order. I would just love him to be able to focus on the work at hand rather than focus on trying to stay focused :-). Quote
jjeepa Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 We had our ds tested by a school psychologist that came by recommendation from our local homeschooling support group. He offered testing on weekends and during the summer break. He was wonderful! We then followed up with our pediatrician and he read through the entire report before we discussed our options. Both the psychologist and the pediatrician recommended medication as my ds was 16 and we were short on time to help him fill in the gaps caused by his ADHD Inattentive type. Also, the pediatrician recommended medication to help him focus while driving. We were hoping to try some other alternatives, but ended up going with the medication due to his age and having college right around the corner. 1 Quote
PeterPan Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Yes, a psychologist first, then ped OR just the ped. Either way works. If you don't suspect learning disabilities, motor planning problems, or other complexities, a clinical psychologist will do. If he's likely gifted, you might look on the Hoagies Gifted list of psychs to see if they give you any additional insight/counsel beyond the diagnosis. Part of this discussion is usually about strengths, etc. And yes, driving is a BIG reason to consider meds, if you look at the stats. 1 Quote
