IfIOnly
I forgot to ask my doctor if I should or shouldn't take melatonin with Ambien. :/

IfIOnly
I'll just skip it tonight and call in the morning. Thanks!
G5052
Very likely no. Both are sedatives in their effect although different mechanisms. Edited August 23, 2016 by G5052
IfIOnly
After researching, I ended up taking a sublingual to get to bed last night after an hour and a half of waiting for the Ambien to kick in. I did call asleep quickly after that. For some reason the Ambien wasn't cutting it. I did get four hours of sleep, I think. Better than what I had been getting but weird because Ambien has worked well in the past. After a bunch of reading, I think my problem was taking it too close to a meal. I are at 8:30 last night and took the ked around 10. Some people online note that Ambien won't work for them unless they take it several hours after a meal and on an empty stomach. I'll call doctor and ask before mixing the two next time.
ktgrok
also, in my experience (my ex husband took Ambient) if you take it and then read, putter around the house, talk to people, etc it WILL NOT make you go to sleep. Instead, you may act a bit drunk, lol. However, if you get in bed, then take it, it worked very quickly. So if you were up waiting for it to kick in, it doesn't usually work that way. You have to actually go to bed, and lay there, for it to work.

You have to actually go to bed, and lay there, for it to work. This. Get it bed, lie down, and turn out the lights. Don't read, don't watch tv. We have some crazy, crazy stories in this house about Ambient induced antics. I can no longer take it, nor can my mom. We sleep walk, sleep eat, sleep talk gibberish, and do all kinds of things in the night. Thankfully, we never drove, but that's not uncommon either. Ambien is an amnesiac, so you won't necessarily remember your crazy night time doings, you'll think you were sleeping. FWIW, my mom would take Ambien and then read. It wouldn't kick in, of course, and she'd add melatonin on top. She's okay, it never hurt her, but I think needing to do so was a sign that she needed to switch sleep meds long, long ago. So call your doc. (If you end up needing a switch, I eventually found that trazadone made me sleep like a baby. It was such a relief. And it sort of reset my sleep patterns - I haven't needed sleep meds in maybe 5 years now.)

IfIOnly
Aw, Thank you! Even with just fours, I got up early this morning and made DH and DS breakfast. I haven't been up and out of bed before DH went to work in years. And I made breakfast. You should have seen the look of shock on DHs face as I was beating up the pan. Ha! Yay sleep! I'm guessing the Ambien gave me deeper sleep than normal. Edited August 23, 2016 by ifIonlyhadabrain
Bluegoat
Did the doctor not realize you were taking the melatonin? Or are both new? In the former case, you probably should not mess with it with no oversight, in the latter I would only do one new thing at a time.

I've taken melatonin for many years and my doctor does know that but I'm a new patient. I forgot to ask and she forgot to address it. I'll be calling today to ask. Thank you!
