melmichigan Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 (edited) We received notice this morning that Landry changed the times for the Advanced Biology, and the new time doesn't work with my DD's existing college schedule. She would have been using Biology 8e Campbell and Reece. We changed her class to the college to alleviate the conflict. Does anyone know anything about the Essential book? Will they be pretty comparable, aside from the obvious change in pacing? She has always been strong in science and is excited about the labs, but it will be a very fast pace. EKS Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Essential Biology is a text for non-science majors. I used it for what I considered to be an on level (so not honors) high school biology class with my younger son. It is a great text, but I would not consider it advanced. The Campbell and Reece text is for biology majors (and is widely used for AP courses)--in fact, I used it myself way back in the day. So, not comparable. Quote

Do you have any feel for where it would specifically be weak? She can't take some of the other upper level classes without the Biology pre-req, and this is the easiest way to get it without the Landry class, but there are options for second semester in microbiology or anatomy and physiology to add to it. There are also some additional books required, so that may help as well. It sounds like it would be on level with the Miller Levine books she used already, so maybe more just review than anything taxing. (Sadly this is the class that AP students get credit for, so it sounds like they are better off in this instance.) I might require more of her if that is the case and I already own the AP book, but I have no idea how I would document that for a transcript. Edited August 23, 2016 by melmichigan Quote

melmichigan Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 I looked it up and this will transfer into all but one college that is listed in our state transfer agreement, so I'm not going to stress it. I know it won't be her only biology, but is rather a stepping stone to higher classes. She may choose to read the Daddy Campbell, just because she is that kid. :) Quote
