Planning 8th grade

Backstory--we started dd in HS PreK a year early. When we realized what that would do when she got to high school, we slowed her down and do she did 6th grade twice. So she has had lots of grammar and history.

 

For 8th grade, here is my current, half-a$$ed plan. I'm tired and ready to move on from homeschooling. This is our last year.

 

She will do the second half of a SL core. I don't remember which.

MUS Algebra 1

Outside Spanish class

Outside Writing class

Outside literature class

Faith and Life 8 for religion

Second half of CHC science book (can't recall the name)

I need more math to add to MUS. She hates math.

She has talked about doing cosmetic chemistry some day so I need to find books in that direction for fun.

She loves to read so I thought about she and I tackling The Well Educated mind together??

Maybe geography? Grammar?

Help a poor, tired mom and give me suggestions. I need to get this planned out this week.

Would she do Khan academy in addition to MUS?

Instead of history, we are going to use Oak Meadow Geography--its focus is cultural geography, so more interesting than just locations and so forth. Mine is going to the high school next year so it will be good to study something different.

Why does she need more math? Are you wanting to supplement Algebra 1 or find something fun to help her enjoy it?

 

Something I've considered pairing with Algebra 1 is Patty Paper Geometry to help get ready for the next year.

Do you need to add more reading (WEM) if she has an outside Lit. class?  Do YOU want to do WEM.  I would only make that plan if you were really enthused about it.  Otherwise, what is the literature class lacking?  Just assign more books, or give her Figuratively Speaking to read, or whatever the outside class is lacking.  

 

I agree about math.  If MUS is the best choice for her, let it be, or else add Kahn Academy as desired.  

 

She's doing a SL core, so I wouldn't add geography.  If she finished the 2nd half of the Core before the end of the year, maybe you could have her research history topics of her choice (last chance to do something interest led before going to school the next year?)

 

For grammar, maybe look for something efficient, that doesn't rely much on you, but will review what she has already learned - maybe something from Daily Grams or Easy Grammar at an appropriate level.

 

I totally understand being tired, and mildly burned out (or more so).  My advice is not to use more than one resource per subject.  Choose well and let it be enough.  And secondly, don't let the weight of things rest on you.  It's great that you've outsourced several classes.  Don't put things back on yourself that you're already paying someone else to do.

I see:

• History/geography/Bible/readers (if you do SL as written)
• Math
• Spanish
• Writing
• Literature
• Religion
• Science

That looks complete to me. I wouldn't add more lit or grammar. I like the idea of doing geography, but only if you want more to do, and I'd probably do it in place of SL. For math, I most likely wouldn't add more if she hates math. Depends on your goals.

 

I was so burned out the last 2 years. I get it. I had to drop almost everything in January for my sanity, and I just emerged from the fog this month. Don't add more to your plate. If she likes reading, suggest books you enjoyed as a kid and discuss them. Or hand her a book list like this and have her put books on hold at the library. 

 

ETA: I did a quick search for cosmetic chemistry, and I'm only getting a bunch of expensive textbooks. And a lot of soapmaking books. Chemical Composition of Everyday Products was at my library. That might be interesting. Soapmaking and perfumery books might be a good place to start. It's kinda hard to find soapmaking guides that aren't anti "chemical". I'll post if I see one that looks promising

If she is going to a B&M school for high school, I would not do MUS Algebra, unless you are planning on her retaking Algebra in 9th. MUS doesn't cover as much as a typical high school Algebra course and she will be behind when she gets to Algebra 2. 

 

(I'm not bashing. We used a lot of MUS, but the fact remains Algebra does not cover the standard scope.)
