mom31257
What happens if you move out of state during treatment, especially if you've paid in full upfront and received big discounts that were offered and dental coverage is paying part? That dental coverage won't follow us, either.
Amira
Bleh. I have more experience with this than I want. My oldest has had his braces on now in three different countries. We have had the same dental coverage through all of it, but depending on the new insurance you get, you might get more paid for because most policies don't cover everything with braces. You'd be starting at zero again with the new policy, if it has orthodontic coverage. Do check with a couple of different orthodontists in your new state. We've had some orthodontists say they would need to start all over with new braces, but we've always been able to find an ortho who could work with what was already in place which is a lot cheaper and less of a hassle. This includes two different US states and two other countries besides the US. I would except the current ortho would refund some of the money, but not all of it to make up for the discount. But they have to be ready to deal with this- people move during orthdontinic treatment and that's the way it is. I'm sorry you have to deal with this.
mom31257
Ugh, that doesn't sound good! I am not 100% sure of a move, but dh really wants to move to Ohio where his family lives. If our house can sell and him find a job, we'll go next summer at the earliest. Ds will have had braces a year then. My best friend has already said I could stay with her for his regular visits if we want to try and continue treatment here. It's a 10-11 hour drive, and I have family in TN and north GA. He only goes every 8 weeks or so. He's had one wire come loose in 4 months, so an emergency could be the biggest problem. Has anyone continued treatment like that? prairiewindmomma
Our orthodontist and insurance had a plan to pro-rate things based on how many months into the expected treatment plan we had completed. It worked out well when we changed insurance because we had already hit close to lifetime payout under one plan but got to start over with the new plan.
lynn
I have yet to hear of a good outcome in this situation. Some people opt to go back to original ortho as needed. I hope you have a better experience than others.
JonesinIndiana
We moved out of state when my DD had 9 more months of treatment and 1 payment left. :( We had exhausted our insurance coverage and did not get dental with DH's new job. Our previous orthodontist gave us a refund of about $800 which we applied to the new orthodontist's bill of $1500. Our out of pocket was $700. I was very happy to get the refund but really bummed about the quotes we got when we were researching which orthodontist to go to. One guy quoted us over $3000!! Good luck! It really blows when you have to move mid-treatment.
purplejackmama
Is Invisalign an option? Our ortho ships us the new trays, because we travel full time. We FaceTime so they can see the progress and we text teeth pics. Edited August 23, 2016 by purplejackmama

Ds has a tooth coming in sideways up in his gum, and they are having to use springs and stuff to make room for it and pull it down. He only has the upper braces on right now, and they put a bar on the bottom for his bite in October. They want to fix the bite before putting braces on bottom. He's had some acrylic stuff on his bottom teeth for several years, but it still hasn't corrected the bite completely.
Forget-Me-Not
When my oldest got braces, we were in a position where we might move during treatment. I asked about it because we paid up front for a discount, and was told they'd refund a prorated amount as needed.

They offered up the information during our "orientation", so it's obvious it's common. They definitely had a plan. I would expect most do. Penguin
We are about to do this, and I have done it once before. Blech. I am prepared for the new ortho to say start over, but I sure hope not. Our current ortho is going to give us a refund if our deposit exceeds actual treatment.
