Have you/kids done Crav Magna?

I have two 13-year-old boys. A few months ago I started a thread for moms of older teens asking, "What do you wish you'd done with your 13-year-old?"

One mom said, "I wish I'd had my child take a self defense class."

That really stuck with me. (Thank you to who said this!!)

Crav Magna is about 8 mins. from our house, but it costs a fortune. It's a self defense training method developed in Israel during WWII.

Edited to add: we've observed an intermediate class and my son took the basic class this a.m. We had a tour of the facilities and talked money with the staff person today. I casually know two guys who go to this Crav Magna -- along with the 14-year old daughter and they rave about it.

Just curious what your experience was with Crav Magna.

Thanks!

There is a Krav Maga club at my karate dojo (obviously at a different class time).  I think 13 is the youngest this group will allow to train.

There seem to be many Krav associations, just like other martial arts styles, with varying degrees of credibility.  Here is a link to the association my school is affiliated with: http://www.your-krav-maga-expert.com/

You would definitely want to observe a class or three before committing.

Yes, we've observed and toured. I'd love to hear people's thoughts on their experience w/ Crav Magna.

My daughter (13) wanted to take Krav Maga, but the places that offered it tended to be predominantly people in their 20's and 30's and heavily tilted towards young men. MMA types. It was just too intimidating of a situation for dd at her age to be the only girl under 30 in a class with 2 women and 15 young men. We chose to do Kuk Sool instead. She has learned a ton of self defense. Her instructor is a former police officer and puts a high priority on teaching the kids to be smart about life situations in addition to the martial arts themselves.
