Solving clues while locked in a room??

My son just informed that he wants a birthday party in which they crack a code to get out a locked room. They just saw a tv show in which there were two teams competing for that. I don't like the idea of locking them in a room, but I am thinking this could work by locking the birthday cake away or the goody bags.

Anyone have an idea of how a birthday party like that could work in my home rather than an outside venue? They would need to solve different clues to reach the final clue.

Something like this: http://www.challengechambers.com

Thanks!!

My dh and I are currently working on one for out friends birthday. There are ebooks that can help you figure out how to set it up. I also believe they sell premise ones but I haven't personally used them I think dh and I saw that at the game store Marbles Brain Storm.

We haven't purchased any of the ebooks yet but I know they exist. We picked a theme, our is Stephen King themed, and have found some neat thrift store finds like a puzzle box and crucifix with hidden compartment. We're slowly coming up with the puzzles and figuring out how it will all work.

We did one for my boys' birthday last year. Just family. It was awesome. We had a blast. The locked door thing is no big deal. There was some emergency button or something in case there was an issue.

You could definitely DIY it... The main expense would be getting locks and/or lock boxes. That was basically what it was. We'd figure out a clue, then it would lead to a number or word that we could use to open a lock. And then that would yield another quest. Until finally we figured out the door lock combination. Ours was art themed (it was a faux little gallery and an attached office). If you do one that's commercial, then be sure you have a kid friendly one. The place where we did that one had a few options and one of them was more "adult" apparently - harder and maybe had some risque bits (IIRC, there was a scandal theme and I think maybe someone had an affair in the fake scandal - there might have been photo "evidence" or something).

It's a lot of fun, we did one with friends about a month ago. There was a thread back then from someone else thinking about doing one at home.

That was me. We did one with a group of friends at a business that does them and immediately came home and started planning our own for in the home.
