Book/video to teach 7yr old boy to knit/crochet?

Recommended Posts

My 7yr old loves to listen to audio books. (I prefer to read to him myself, but the little boys just won't let that happen.) He often does puzzles or plays with Legos while he listens. I would love to find a book or DVD that would teach him to knit or crochet so that he can add that in to the mix of things he can do to keep his hands busy while he listens.

Are there any books/DVDs/videos that you could recommend that could teach him how to knit/crochet? I can't help him -  I've tried to do both, and I just can't. My brain just doesn't function on that level!

I really like the book Kids Knitting by Melanie Falick.

It has instruction and projects and the photos show both girls *and* boys knitting.

Have you considered a knitting loom? I helped teach a kids' knitting class at our library this summer, and teaching seven year olds to knit is REALLY hard. Many of them just don't have the coordination in their hands yet to hold on to everything. A knitting loom is much easier to use, and they can still make hats and scarves and things.

With a 7 year old, I'd start with crochet chains.  There are LOTS of youtube videos!  Check them out.  :)

I taught a knit/crochet class to a group of age 9+ kids last year.  It's funny how some kids just GET IT and some kids never got it at all.

I definitely think crochet would be a better place to start than knitting with a 7 year old.  I'm a fairly confident and experienced crocheter and knitting still intimidates me (and I'm 40, lol).

I second YouTube.  There are so many really great videos to show you how to get started! :)

I agree that the book Kids Knit is a wonderful resource! Check your local library.  You can also prob get it very cheaply second hand on Amazon.  It's been around for a long time. That and some youtube videos should do the trick.  Or, maybe go to your local yarn store, if you have one. They are used to people walking in and asking for help. But, if you have such a store, the best way to do that is to walk in and ask if there is anyone there you could pay to teach your kid to knit. I have a friend who did that all the time. She would have kids up and knitting in an hour. Then if he has questions...how to I bind off, how do I perl, etc, you can go to their drop in hours.

FWIW, my younger son loves knitting, I've just done a crappy job teaching him. I kept meaning to bring him to my friend, but she isn't teaching knitting to kids anymore...  But he did like doing it while listening to audiobooks or playing with legos. He doesn't do it much any more, mostly due to my totally crap teaching.

My daughter taught herself to crochet (at about age 8-9) using the DK book called A Little Course in Crochet.

I wouldn't have a clue how to crochet, so I was zero help. The book must have been pretty clear and easy to follow.
