athomeontheprairie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Every summer we go to the lake to swim. Every time we go, dd's (now 11) lips burn. It's bad. They swell up, turn purple then white, blister up and peel off. Two questions: how do we prevent this? It ONLY happens when we go to the lake. Never the pool, or just being outside. And how should we treat it? Quote
zoobie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Does she put sunblock on her lips? Could she be reacting to something in the water vs burning? 2 Quote
athomeontheprairie Posted August 16, 2016 Author Posted August 16, 2016 Does she put sunblock on her lips? Could she be reacting to something in the water vs burning? She did this summer. But it's still pretty bad, though not nearly as bad as in the past. It's only at the lake, and only her lips. If she was reacting, wouldn't there be other indications? Quote
J-rap Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Maybe the sun reflecting off the water makes it worse. I've heard zinc oxide is a good preventative, if she doesn't mind white pasty lips! Quote
LucyStoner Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) Lip balm with SPF, reapplied often plus a wide brimmed hat and be off the water/inside when the sun is at its peak. Nothing else works for me. I burn like crazy. So swim in the morning, eat a later lunch and take a break until early evening. Some people just can't do the sun all day. That is all the ideas I can think of. Quote
redsquirrel Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Yeah, as a redhead, I only buy chapstick with SPF of at least 30 and I always wear a hat. I apply chapstick quite often at the beach etc. I always have a couple tubes going, one in my purse...one in the beach bag...one that goes in my pocket. It is easy to find at the supermarket. There are a few other brands with SPF but they sometimes have a terrible taste. So far, Chapstick has been one of the few that doesn't have a weird sunblock taste. It's just plain chapstick and I can deal with the taste of that. My boys use it as well. And if her lips are burning etc...what is she using for sunblock on the rest of herself? Is she putting it on her face? I see a couple of life guards at the pool using the thick white zinc oxide on their noses and lips and cheeks. They look kind of cool, lol. And I am sorry that happened. Ive had a LOT of sunburns but nothing like that on my lips. Poor kid, that must be miserable. Quote
mommyoffive Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I haven't seen chapstick with 30 spf. Is that at the store? Quote
redsquirrel Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I haven't seen chapstick with 30 spf. Is that at the store? Yeah, I get it there. I see that it's 25, not 30, if it's chapstick brand. I do have a 50 spf lip balm but I don't remember the brand and it tasted terrible! https://smile.amazon.com/ChapStick-Defense-0-15-Ounce-Pack/dp/B004Z7QZ08/ref=sr_1_7_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1471380237&sr=8-7&keywords=chapstick+spf I don't pay near that much at the grocery store. There is also this which is only SPF 12, which is better than nothing https://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=chapstick+spf+ Quote
zoobie Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I react to oxybenzone and avobenzone, so most lip balms with SPF make my lips peel for days. They changed one of my favorite lip balms and added SPF and I didn't notice. Anyway, if I'm going to be in the sun, I use the Neutrogena Pure & Free baby stick that has zinc instead of the other stuff in it. It's not a lip balm, but it works just fine. It's either 45 or 60 SPF. If she's tubing or doing boat stuff, maybe she's also getting wind burned on top of sunburned? 1 Quote
