jjeepa Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 My 12 year old dd took AoPS Intro to Algebra A online last year and struggled, but ended up doing well. I asked for instructor feedback and they gave her an A and thought she mastered the material. My plan was for her to do the Counting and Probability course this fall on her own (she wasn't a fan of the pace of their online class) and then move onto to the Intro to Algebra B course in the winter. However, she is now requesting a change of curriculum and also doesn't seem to have retained much from the Algebra course. We were working on some review and she really struggled. I'm really at a loss. How did she pull off an A but not retain much? I expected the discovery approach to lead to a good foundation, but that isn't the case. So, I'm looking at switching curriculums - any suggestions? Plus, do I also have her repeat Algebra 1 due to low retention? Thanks for your help! Quote
EKS Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 My son took Algebra I at a b&m school and had a horrible experience (the teacher was actually fired he was so bad) resulting in poor retention (or never learning, I'm not sure which). I wanted for him to have a solid review but also move forward somewhat. We used Lial's Intermediate Algebra, and it worked great. My son then took Derek Owens' Algebra 2 course and did very well. He was able to complete it in a semester because the first part was all review. A couple of things. On the conceptual to procedural spectrum, Lial is procedural. I added the conceptual parts myself. Also, even though people use Intermediate Algebra as an Algebra 2 course, it is not complete (IMO). Also, you don't need to assign all of the problems if your student doesn't need them. You don't even need to assign all the odds. Since a lot of it will be review, you can move quickly through what she already knows and linger over what she doesn't. 1 Quote
................... Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Hi, my son had a very similar experience. I would have her sign up with khan academy now algebra 1 and have her review and learn. I personally would not make her repeat algebra one. It could also be summer fog that's slowing her down. My son was struggling with algebra when I started making him review and then he hit his stride. He is still struggling with factoring square polynomials but almost any algebra 2 course will review that. We ourselves are going back to Saxon, but I can't say what you should do. That's just what seemed best to us. 2 Quote

We could take a few months for review and then jump into that course when she felt ready. Hmmmm. Thanks for your response! Quote

I think we'll take that path for now. I know we can always slow down or lengthen the review. Thanks! Quote
