Lightning Lit--What's the difference between 1st and 2nd editions of LL8?

I am teaching Lightning Lit 8 this year at a co-op. I have the second edition, and one of the co-op families has the opportunity to buy the first edition. What's the difference? Can they get by with a different edition?
