need2read Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 My son wants to take German this year. I am having a really difficult time finding materials. Most publishers only have French, Spanish or Latin. What do you use for German? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
CinV Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 I'm in the same boat with my son. I'm looking at the BYU online option because I want him to have teacher support and we have liked other classes we have done through them. Quote
ValRN Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 We use OSU German Online. It's relatively inexpensive, has German I-IV & AP German, is at student's pace, and has been effective for my DD. She meets on Skype with someone from the OSU German department every week to have questions answered, check her pronounciation, practice the lessons she's covered that week, etc. DD loves it and has requested to use them for the upcoming year. This year, however, I think I'll also hire a native speaker for DD to get more speaking practice. HTH Quote
Tess in the Burbs Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 My son is starting German with Landry this fall. The text is older from public schools but easily found online for decent price. I wanted some live teacher as part of foreign language. I expect he will utilize office hours more with this class lol! Quote
shawthorne44 Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Check out the Michael Thomas CD's. I might have misspelled his name, I think the spelling was a little more French. I am a complete language dunce. I swear I am missing the part of the brain that hears subtle pronunciation differences and learns new languages. But, he managed to teach me some German. What he does is explain some things then have you guess what the German word would be. For example, very first lesson he explains about letters shifting between English and German. One of the shifts he mentions is that an English T becomes SS in German. Then he says, verbs usually end in 'en'. So what do you think the German for Eat might be? There are two students on the CD learning along with you. So, one gives their guess. His story is also super cool. He was in French Resistance during WW2 and he used his language facility. I don't know if this is true, but in that book about the parrot that was taught a lot of words (he even understood zero) they said that watching someone else learn a language is the quickest way to learn it yourself. So, that is what they did with the parrot. Quote
Arcadia Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 The high school textbooks that is commonly used locally can be found in my local university's bookstore. The local high schools have used and still use Komm Mit Deutsch Na Klar Quote
madteaparty Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 We are going to do the WTMA class. It's three times a week, which means we actually have a chance to learn something ;) 1 Quote
Arcadia Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) We are going to do the WTMA class. It's three times a week, which means we actually have a chance to learn something ;) Do they have German 2 planned? 3pm eastern time would work for my kids as supplementary to their weekly slower paced class which is more for socializing in person. it would be cheaper than hiring a tutor to supplement which is what we planned for. ETA: We are thinking of OSU as well because hubby wants a complete scope and sequence. Maybe we should just dump our kids at Goethe :P. Edited August 3, 2016 by Arcadia Quote
madteaparty Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Do they have German 2 planned? I don't think so, but we hope to start and continue :) Quote
rjand6more Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 We used a Currclick class last year with Mr. G. It was awesome. DD had a fun time and learned a lot! this year she is taking German 2 with Landry. Since Mr G. may not have a year 3, she decided to take year 2 and 3 hopefully with the same teacher. Quote
Arcadia Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I don't think so, but we hope to start and continue :) My youngest who needs lots of spiral review is in. I bought the online textbook one year license for him as well in case we want to do work at the library. 1 Quote
VAMOM Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 My seventh grader wants to take German this year as well, but we can't make the 3:00 Monday class time. Can someone tell me what the "Delayed" course option is? Does that just mean you watch recorded classes? Quote
