1GirlTwinBoys Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 So every morning for several months I have been eating hazelnut spread on whole grain toast. OMG I love this! I noticed yesterday morning my lip felt weird and tingly before church but didn't know what that was about. Today after breakfast I noticed the same thing. My upper lip felt tingly and numb. So sad that I can't have this delicious breakfast anymore. I'm 48 years old and other than caffeine, I have never had food sensitivities. This really stinks! purplejackmama Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Eat through the PAIN!!! Seriously, that stinks. Ugh. 1 Quote
umsami Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I saw the thread title and thought, "but what about Nutella"? :( I really hope it's something else. Have you changed anything in the past day or two? New bread? Different brand? New toothpaste? Something? Quote

There's a LOT of stuff in hazelnut spread... It may not be the nuts but something else not regularly in your diet elsewhere. 1 Quote
zoobie Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I'd go to an allergist ASAP. One of my best friends developed an anaphylactic nut allergy in her 40s. She was eating trail mix, driving down the highway and thankfully was right near an exit with a hospital. 4 Quote
sbgrace Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 (edited) There is an oral allergy syndrome related to hazlenut. I think it's a tree pollen. In that case you would only have symptoms during an allergy season. Generally, cooked wouldn't be an issue. The tingling is consistent with oral allergy. Then straight up allergy can be deadly so...I think it's worth testing if you can find a doctor who will run blood immuno-cap RAST or see an allergist for skin testing. You might need an epi pen. FWIW, my husband developed an anaphylactic allergy in his late 30's. It happens. Edited August 2, 2016 by sbgrace 3 Quote
Spryte Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 I developed an anaphylactic allergy in my 40s, too. It happens. Please see an allergist. We'll all hope it's oral allergy syndrome, but you need to know for sure - and you probably need an epipen on hand. 1 Quote
ikslo Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Yes, it stinks, and I would completely understand a good cry into your pillow; but please listen to the PPs who have suggested you have allergy testing done. Quote
PinkyandtheBrains. Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Yep I developed a severe food allergy in my 30's. Agreeing with others, go get tested to be sure. Quote
HomeAgain Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Get allergy testing done. If it's Nutella, though, I can tell you I get a similar reaction but my whole mouth hurts. By chance I tried an organic hazelnut spread and I have no problem with it. The ingredients are similar but different, and I'm not sure what it is exactly that makes Nutella hurt. Quote
1GirlTwinBoys Posted August 2, 2016 Author Posted August 2, 2016 This is the Simple Truth Organic brand that I'm eating. I'm allergic to ragweed and pollen so I'm getting into my allergy season here. That's weird that it could only bother you during certain times like that. I will probably get the testing done soon and will try to avoid it during the meantime. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 a recipe for a chocolate almond spread: http://www.popsugar.com/food/Almond-Nutella-Recipe-23949460 Best wishes in the allergy testing! I had an anaphylactic reaction pop up in my mid-30s. It happens. :( Quote
hornblower Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 I'd get tested to find out what it is exactly. Maybe it's the dairy or cocoa or one of the oils or something else. Quote
