displace Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Do you know of an app that you can take a picture of a page and it does speech if you highlight or something? Most text to speech apps are for pdf or electronic books. But I'm looking for something that can do a quick read of a physical page through the camera or something. Quote
AnthemLights Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 I am currently looking for the same thing for my son, so I can't recommend anything from personal experience. However here is a list that I found that I am going to start researching further. KNFB Reader seems to be what we are both looking for but it seems to me that I saw another (cheaper) app recommended somewhere and now I can't find it. :001_huh: https://www.noodle.com/articles/32-apps-dyslexic-students-will-love-for-everyday-learning I am going to follow this thread in the hopes that someone else with more experience can chime in. 1 Quote
displace Posted August 2, 2016 Author Posted August 2, 2016 I was looking at voice reader (which will read PDFs), and there are apps that convert photos to pdf (so a picture of a book). So we could use two apps, but idk if voice reader will also convert to pdf, how seamless it would be, or if that would be too burdensome. It seems obvious to me we need something like that!? Quote

Now that I've looked through your link, thanks so much! I think that's it. A lot are pricey but the article is using the words I need to search better. Quote
PeterPan Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 You're still not there (probably), because the pdf needs to be ocr. It's an extra layer, optical something. Without that the words are not coded as words. The conversion quality varies. When schools do it (what our OT was telling us) they'll set up a little station so you put the tech on the stand, get a consistent height, and just really give the app the best chance. I tried it a little bit and for me it wasn't worth the effort. But I didn't try Claro. It's pricy, but that's what the OT said they use at their school. Did it do ALL the functions? Scan, convert to OCR, read, AND let them write/type on it. Quote
displace Posted August 2, 2016 Author Posted August 2, 2016 My biggest problem is I still hate the text to speech voices. Maybe DS wouldn't even care (so far we use only audiobooks). And I know there are different voices, but I don't even want to bother researching them. I guess when we signed up for public school I traded homeschooling for afterschooling+advocacy+researching stuff we didn't need while homeschooling. Quote
PeterPan Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Voicedream has pretty good voices. Or move to chipmunk speed and they all sound good, lol. Yup, school just trades one set of challenges for another. Imagine me and some of the others here. We've been fighting for IEPs, just like our kids are in school, AND having to do the work of homeschooling. Now granted school has other time hogs (things to sign, homework, pta, blah blah). Just saying we're a little sympathetic. :) 1 Quote

displace Posted August 3, 2016 Author Posted August 3, 2016 I'm not sure how school will go. It was pretty obvious that public school was a time waste for us in first grade, but third? Will afterschooling and advocacy take the same time as homeschooling? Will the benefits outweigh the negatives? A trial is all we can do, but we'll see. 1 Quote
