Edit to finish the post ( :glare: ):  Do you have any input on the instructors?

Just registered DD for Expository Essay class. She hates writing, but did fine last year with Kidswrite Intermediate. I hope this one goes well, too.

DS is taking Advanced Composition with Jean Hall.

Just signed dd up for that too!  It's her first Bravewriter class, but I did talk to Julie to make sure first. :)

And I signed her up for Literary Analysis after that...

She's taking English 101 at the CC in the spring, so want to get some good writing in this fall...  even though, ouch $ - I'm hoping it's as excellent as everyone says!!

The September 6 session with Samantha Burtner.  She had Samantha last year for KI and loved her, so we're happy with this!

Her Passion for Fiction instructor was Kiersten or Kristen . . . something. i can't remember and she's not here to ask. But she liked her, too. We're 2 for 2 so far.

DD did KWI and EE with Jean Hall last year.

It helped to explain just one teacher our Belgic schoolsystem :)

I liked it she didn't allow dd to walk the easy road and write about the same topic again (and again).

She also accepted that dd uses mixed resources (some in English, some in Dutch)

For the 2016-2017 schoolyear I hope to enroll dd in 'High School Writing Projects', it was a winter course last year.

I can fulfill some of our 'cross border subject requirements' with that one.

We will start in september with Windows to the World (IEW) and an Oxford Word Skill book.

Yep, Ds is prepping for English 101 in the Spring or Summer semester too:)

Does anyone know if the MLA Research course is also typically available again in the winter or spring? It did not fit our schedule this round.

I wrote to ask them just that and got this response:

Thank you for contacting us. The MLA Research Essay class will be offered again during the spring semester, Feb 6-Mar 17.

Ds is taking SAT/ACT Essay this fall and planning to do MLA Research essay in the winter.

I know you didn't ask this, but I had to jump in. The instructor for that class, Susanne Barrett, is FAB.U.LOUS.

DD has taken a whole bunch of classes from Mrs. Susanne and has loved every one.  We puffy heart love Mrs. Susanne around here.

(DD's just going into 9th, though, so she's not taken that particular class.)

We have had a problem with instructors extending the class beyond the planned end date because the instructor got behind on the feedback. It has happened twice with two different instructors. Once we had an international flight scheduled the day after the planned end date, and the second time we were moving immediately after the planned end date.

I have learned my lesson and will plan a buffer of time beyond the stated end. But it still bugs me because my kid stresses to meet his deadlines.

It is comparable to a forum format.

The assignment is cut in pieces so you have to post something on several days using the next assignment what you post before.

But only with one larger project. Switching project means switching topic.

Giving feedback to others is part of your grade.

If it's not a live class at BW, how does the peer interaction work? I was debating between BW classes and WHA's FOEW, but for sure, we'll start BW classes next summer.

There is an online "forum" where you post your assignments and the instructor posts their feedback. You can filter to look at just your own work, or you can look at the whole class work. I know that for the Passion for Fiction class, it was very active - students were posting a lot of their own writing above and beyond what was required. The teacher only commented on the assigned work, but the kids read and commented on each other's extra work as well. I think they set up a separate page for the "extra" postings? It was great, though. I think she has maintained communication with a couple of kids from the class.

:iagree: This is a valid negative.  We had this happen for the first time in the spring (note: it has happened once out of about seven classes.)  It made me nuts.  My DD had an EXTRAORDINARILY challenging spring, and we were both looking forward to the break.  Having one class drag on was seriously demoralizing.

Yep, and it does not help teach the kids that deadlines are deadlines.
