whitestavern Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 We're meeting some friends at a campground for dinner. I'm bringing a blueberry pie. I really want ice cream but I feel like even in a cooler it'll melt before we have dessert. What else can I serve with it? There must be something I'm not thinking of... Quote
HomeAgain Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 I would let the pie stand alone and serve lemonade with it. 1 Quote
marbel Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 I would just take the pie. Lemonade sounds good too, if a beverage is needed. Though I like my blueberry pie with coffee, hot or iced. :-) Quote
Farrar Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 Extra fresh berries to sprinkle on top? If you're opposed to "fake" whipped cream, you could make some and bring it. I think it'd stay cool enough in the cooler for a day to be fine. Of course, frozen cool whip (perfectly thawed in the cooler by the end of the day!) or a can of reddiwhip would be even easier. 1 Quote
Rosie_0801 Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Cashew cream. Put cashews and a few dates in a blender with a little water. Quote
happi duck Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Some of my favorite threads start with "Quick..." Suddenly the board turns into a game show and I want to 'buzz' in with the 'right' answer. *Reads thread title and shouts 'vanilla ice cream'...opens thread and sees that is the *wrong* answer...shouts 'anchovy paste' because I can't think under pressure* :) 17 Quote
ktgrok Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Whipped cream in a can. Don't make it hard :) 3 Quote
Tanaqui Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 If you really want ice cream, can you get it in a cooler with some dry ice? We used to do that when we were kids to carry ice cream to the beach. Quote
whitestavern Posted August 1, 2016 Author Posted August 1, 2016 Thanks, all. I ended up serving just the pie, which was delish--haven't made a blueberry pie in years. I was afraid I wasn't going to have enough to serve everyone, which is why I wanted to boost it with ice cream (and why whipped cream wouldn't real fit the bill) But it was fine; there was even a piece left over. Tanaqui, interesting idea on the dry ice. Where do you purchase that, and is it expensive? Quote
Tanaqui Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Well, gosh, we got it at the supermarket I think, but a quick google suggests that this might not be so easy nowadays. Quote
Spryte Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Well, gosh, we got it at the supermarket I think, but a quick google suggests that this might not be so easy nowadays. Last time we needed it (for a Mad Scientist test tube cake that DH made - awesome!), we had to drive 30 miles to a special medical supply store. It was very difficult to find. Quote
Tanaqui Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I guess it varies a lot, because there seem to be plenty of places you can purchase small quantities of it in the NYC area. Quote
Renthead Mommy Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Dry ice is in every food store around here. Up front by the registers abd regular ice. You tell them you want it as ringing up and a bagboy or manager usually goest to get ut for you. I paid about $4 for half a slab. It is sold by the pound, maybe a little mire than regular ice per pound. Quote
