Sourcing AoPS books in Australia

You could try to PM lewelma (Ruth in NZ) - her son used aops and she might know where in Australia or NZ it can be purchased...

Pretty sure she got them from AOPS. I remember her mentioning it. They may been purchased while over there though or brought over by family.

I have seen the occasional book on better world books (free shipping). But alas, never the one I'm looking for!

Rainbow resources is my go-to. If you order a fair bit at once the postage isn't "too" bad comparatively. I don't believe there is a local reseller

Has anyone tried contacting Horrible Ray? I know he's very willing to work with groups in the USA to reduce costs wherever possible, and he carries the full AOPS line.

Horrible Ray? Is that Horrible Books? I just googled it and that looks promising. All my favourite books in one place  :hurray: .

To order the AoPS prealgebra book direct from AoPS will be $140 AU$ total. One book.

 

It hurts to type it.

 

RR was a smidge cheaper, coming in at around $130 AU$ for the one book.

 

 

Horrible Ray was not horrible at all. He answered my email so promptly and so politely, but said it just isn't worth the cost and risk to post to Australia.  :crying:

 

AoPS has an ebook option - $80, but apparently you can't print pages from it. We just don't work well from a screen, so I'm discounting that option for the moment.

Sometimes. Probably not for AoPS though, because they're so heavy.

 I calculated it at AUS$135 to buy and ship both AOPS Pre-Alg and the solutions manual.  Why was it so much for just one book???  Weird!

I think it said text with solutions or something similar - is that two books? I guess the postage isn't quite so bad if it's two books .... it's still an awful lot of money, though.

I expect there'll be a few dollars difference depending on the exchange rate that day. 

 

 

The not-horrible, but actually very helpful, Ray, suggested that next time I know someone who is travelling to the US to get him to post to their hotel and they can bring it home in their luggage.

A viable option if I had someone travelling there in the near future. My husband travels for work occasionally, but nothing is scheduled at the moment.  

 

I think I'll probably give Alcumus a go, check we like the style and then go with Rainbow Resources if we like it.

If it's really as good as everyone says, then I can justify the expense.

 

I've searched ebay, Amazon and also betterworldbooks. Betterworldbooks has some AoPS books, but not the one I'm after right now - prealgebra.

Can you do a group buy from rainbow resources and split shipping? We do that every now and then with our homeschool group.

Australia post also has an international postage option where you get some one like Not Horrible Ray to post your books to the OzPost address and they then post it to you. Its great for companies who wouldn't normally ship to our end of the planet. Not sure how it affects the price.

One other option, and I don't Know how well it works financially is there are services that just provide a us based shipping address and then forward it to you.
