*LC
In 15 years of homeschooling, Abeka elementary math is the only thing that I have used for everyone. However, I have realized that I don't care for 6th/7th. So, I am wanting to try something new. Here is what I liked: Scripted lesson with good instructions & oral/written review with me with concepts already introduced. After reading here, I looked at Math Mammoth and CLE math. I think I want more instruction that Math Mammoth gives. The samples I looked at for CLE seemed to jump to a completely different/important topic every day. I am looking for something I teach rather than on computer, because this next child likes to get off task when given computer time. I am open to suggestions and hearing why I am wrong about Math Mammoth and CLE. Thank you.
...................
Horizons is somewhat similar to Abeka, but I wouldn't say it has a lot of instruction. But, that is one of the things we like about it. It doesn't get overly complicated or verbose. If my dd can't understand it, then I teach it myself, and if we want, we look up a video on Khan Academy. The TM can be somewhat helpful too, but usually we prefer a video. We have only used up to 6th grade and will be starting their Pre-Algebra this year, so I can't really say but it looks fine. I waffled around looking at many other options, and I just can't leave Horizons because it's been working for her for so many years. I do plan to supplement with Ed Zacarro's Challenge Math though. Guest
We went from Abeka 5 to BJU 7 Math Fundamentals. We are about 4 weeks in and I am very happy with it. I skipped 6 because I wanted to hit pre-algebra in 7th grade and I felt that my son could handle it. If you have a child that struggles with math I would not recommend it, though. There is a ton of review and practice and additional teaching problems if you needed them.
