What's your "official" start date? Are you still going with your original plans?

Recommended Posts

DS starts school next Monday, so that's DD's soft start date, even though her enrichment program doesn't start up until the following week.

She will have diagnostic review only for math the first few weeks, and her first STEPS course, "How to do STEPS" should be pretty easy.

Soft start next week because DD's first live bio class is the week after. My parents will be here, so it will be a very soft start. The next week she'll do the first live class and we'll start Math. The week after that, online LA and her elective history starts, and we'll add Latin and our first homeschool club meeting and cheer team the week after. Piano will start after Labor Day. Her special topics in science will start about then as well, once her mentors have their fall classes started well and DD starts coming in for classes.

We are still waiting for DD's Australian history textbooks. They were published in June, but Book Depository UK doesn't have them yet.

We plan to "officially" start on Sept. 6 this year. I think we'll do a soft start the week before to just get back in to the habit of getting ready for the day, fleshing out our rough schedule, and to ensure we've got all the things we need to start off on the right foot.

I wish we could start September 6. Too many outside classes dictating the schedule this year. Since DD took the ACT in June, and then we've had three weeks of travel and a week of camp locally, it doesn't feel like we've had the just down, relaxed time. And with family arriving Saturday, next week wouldn't be relaxed even if DD didn't have to start on Biology!

With this being our first "OFFICIAL ON THE BOOKS" year, we've got a lot of flexibility. Ms. Bug has been begging to start schoolwork since May  :crying: (she's working hard to make sure I know she's not my baby anymore). I'm almost convinced she will be the kid who sprints off the line but fades once the newness of the different curricula wears off. I'm hoping to meter her so I can keep her excitement going for longer than I'm anticipating.

So our plan is... basically August is a soft start we have days off and non school stuff throughout...

Aug 9,10,11 soft start short week...

Aug 15 school day, 16= Writing + amusement park, 17=  Math and writing + apple picking, 18- light school day but at our co-op location where I'll be volunteering that day, 19 school day + some audio book work in the car for all this stuff..

Solid start Aug 22, also the first week of enrichment classes.

Plus a two night camping trip the next week.

Then Labor day

Then we get down to business :)

Our first year of homeschooling began the day after DD's last day of PS. At 7:00 in the morning. On a Saturday. She was that eager to start. It was a good thing that I'd bought materials early to figure out what I was doing!

Now, well, I suspect getting her out of bed without a crowbar won't be easy-and I'm not willing to start our day at 1:00 PM, so it may be a difficult adjustment.

I've been planning Aug 1 as an official start for my first year (pre-k!) but I've been second-guessing, partly because I'm not sure how to actually start, partly because I don't feel like we have a routine in place--and life has been utterly chaotic with travel, therapy appointments, husband job change, a work deadline for me.

Plus, the more research I do, the more I waffle over curriculum. I bought materials for Five in a Row but then I found Wee Folk Art, and then I realized my son's artistic education has been lacking so now I'm considering the first Artistic Pursuits book, and trying to decide whether to buy the Explode the Code primer materials. And then I discovered Morning Baskets. I really want to put one together for us because I think that will help ground me even on mornings when I come downstairs to a sink full of dishes and a mess to clean up just before I can get to the coffee maker. And, August 1 is shaping up to generally be a bad day, with a work project deadline (me) and afternoon therapy appt (ds).

So basically I've spent all summer researching and accumulating and planning...but I still don't have a solid plan.

Those of you who do mid-week "soft starts", could you explain a little how you approach that? Especially with younger students?

My kids have been asking to start every day so we're doing our read aloud (which we would have done anyway) and I've let them start their math books just to satisfy them but we won't start everything else for a couple more weeks.  I'm still getting my plans organized.

We started on Monday with just Math, Reading, Art.  Next week, we are adding in science.  The week after that - everything.

So far, 3 of the kids were fine with their plans.  I am worried the 13 year-old won't be able to keep up with the reading in AO Year 7...   :glare: Ivanhoe is staring back at us from the bookcase.  We'll give it a try, though.  If he can't handle it, I'm not sure what he'll do this year.

I had to completely scrap the 8 year-old's plans.  She is going to do interest-led learning this year instead of Five in a Row.  I'm going to set aside a time each day and have her do "school", but it will be whatever she wants to do.  At this point, all she wants to do is math and cursive.

August 1st. This is the first year ever that I'm ready to start back to a daily routine. My kids are not too happy about it but I'm feeling ready to get going. I had planned to start in July but my kids ended up doing a few camps in July. This summer didn't feel relaxed or care free so I'd rather get back to school and then take a break when we need it.

We are trying a lot of new things this year. Math is staying the same for both, same cursive for youngest, same W&R for oldest, same reading for youngest, same spelling for both. Everything else is new. I hope we love it and can stick to the same curriculum in the future.

Sept 6 - when the public schools here start. We will do some astronomy study I'm August because they requested it and August is great for stargazing here, but our school routine starts in September. And I'll be using what I planned to, except for switching Latin to French and dropping a few things for my 6yo (had a few ideas and was going to see what fit best).

My official start date is when we get our fish tank.   :D  No seriously, I'm trying to set ds up an office, so when we get that done and the fish tank up and running (cuz you gotta have sensory and a class pet, yes!), then we'll start.

In reality, it will be when the summer activities and craziness end and the ABA tutors switch over to their college schedule.  I think August 22. We might do some light things the week before to transition back, but 8/22 will be full bore.

We are doing 3 days this week and then officially start Monday. But now dh wants to take Monday off so I'll probably push it to Tuesday. We like starting early around here so we can take time off for vacations or out-of-town relatives in the fall and spring.

Monday {August 1st} here for a soft start. Though we may actually start Tuesday as I have quite a bit of errands to run Monday.

Our PS starts August 22nd - we'll be spending that day on a field trip at the zoo, in theory

That's our plan too, only I think we're going to the Texas Ranger museum.

Two of DD#1's online classes start the week of Aug 22nd, so that's when she'll officially start.

The rest of us will do half-days the following week, skip Labor Day, then start up on Sept 6th full days.

I'm NOT READY YET!  :willy_nilly:

August 15, because that's when outside classes start back up.

I own most of what I expect to use, but I really need to sit down and sketch out some plans.  I have been busy with a writing deadline but that will be out the door on Monday, so i should have some time to focus on homeschooling before we get started.
