Carrie12345 Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I already feel like there's a lot of debate over whether a semester college course equals a full or half high school credit. Or maybe it just seems that way? Am I crazy? Dd is probably going to wind up with a wide variety of very different types of college classes and equivalents through high school. She's already taking a firefighting course that our local cc will recognize for 4 credits. She'll be participating in many activities that earn various credit hours with certificates from another cc. Today, she starts a camp/class combo at private 2-yr college, which awards 3 credits for the 8-day program. I don't think she's going to keep up this pace for 4 years. At least, I hope she doesn't keep up this pace for 4 years! But I do anticipate at least a few more classes, including some more traditional academic semester classes. With so much variation, I'm starting to wonder how I'm going to quantify things! In my head, a 3-credit college course is equivalent to 1 high school credit. But her 8 day course is around 60 hours, and there's absolutely no way she'll be doing another full 60 (forget more) of work/study after class. But, if she takes a 3 credit history course at some point, wouldn't it look strange to label one as a full credit and one as a half? I still have to research the program that awards in drips and drabs. Those may be irrelevant unless she decides to get an emergency services degree, in which case they'll become VERY relevant. Obviously, we'll be tracking them, but I have no clue about transcribing them. If she had been of age for the past classes, she would already have 2 certificates. (Dh does.) All of this seemed so much simpler 9 years ago! ;) 1 Quote
foxbridgeacademy Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I'm with you, I'd have a bit of trouble counting the 60 hour course as a full credit. 1/2 would be good though. In the end you may not need it for academics and could list it as extra-curricular instead. Quote
Luckymama Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Don't worry about trying to fit all the bits and pieces onto a "regular" transcript form :) I would keep 2 running documents, updated every semester or as needed: a typical academic transcript and a listing of all the interesting bits (firefighting!) with contact hours and other pertinent information. I suggest this because by junior year/summer after you'd be able to pull seemingly disparate short courses and activities together into full and half credits. I also suggest for the morbid reason that if you aren't around to create her transcript, she and your dh would have a traditional-looking transcript and a kicking activities list to work with. (I believe every homeschooling should regularly update records "just in case.") 3 Quote

Adding "Creating files dh and dc can manage" to my list! Quote
Carrie12345 Posted July 27, 2016 Author Posted July 27, 2016 60 hours seems very short for a 4 credit class. Are some of them quarter credits rather than semester credits? If they're all listed as semester credits, I'd give a 3 semester class one high school credit. I would be consistent whatever you do. PP suggested just giving extra-curr credit. Be aware that ALL college credits have to be acknowledged and all must be on a transcript sent from the college. It's considered academic dishonesty to do otherwise. And yeah, it's a pain to send all those transcripts! The 60 hour is the 3 credit course. The 4 credit course is 180 contact hours, but I realized earlier today that it's even stickier. Or it is in my brain right now. It may clear up later! She's not old enough to take the last 16 or so hours of that course, or take the final exam. She can pick up those last hours and exam when she turns 18 but, depending on scheduling, that may wind up being after high school graduation. That said, she won't be awarded the actual college credit unless/until she enrolls in a school and requests it (and has passed the test.) It's the same course offered by our community colleges, but it's being taken through our public safety organization. Quote
Space station Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 We use .25 high school credits / 1 college credit. 3 credit class = 0.75 high school credits, 4 credit class = 1 high school credit. We did it this way because it is what our local high school does. Quote
