Calizzy
odd will be starting 3rd grade this fall and we have never done music lessons. At the moment both the cost and the one-more-thing-to-do just seems too much. Dh and I are not musical and I am inclined to just not do it. But it seems like everyone we know does put their kid in to some sort of music lesson. Would we be doing a major disservice if we don't (or even never!) do music lessons? SamanthaCarter
My kids have not been in formal music lessons. I enrolled my oldest in a large community-wide children's choir two years ago when we started homeschool to fill in for music. He gets a little bit of exposure to learning to read music, though no formal training, and a good experience in learning some basic voice, teamwork and group performance. I'm happy with that. DD auditioned and will be joining him this fall. We will probably never be able to afford giving our kids real music lessons unless one is really dying to do it. Choir is pretty cost effective in my opinion, depending on if you factor in the cost of concert attire and some other things or not, it works out to about $12/hour. Rosie_0801
Even if you have money coming out of your ears, you can only do what you have time for. If that's not a realistic opportunity for your family because you're taking advantage of other opportunities that are more important (or affordable :p ) so be it. You can still have music in your lives even if you don't take lessons.
Wheres Toto
My kids are going into 4th and 6th and we still haven't done much as far as music. They do choir at our church and that's about it. I plan to teach them to read music this coming year, and do a little bit of keyboarding with them because we already have electric keyboards. Youngest dd also has a guitar so I'm going to have her watch videos to learn how to play. We'll also listen to appropriate music along with history. IF they show a strong interest after we do that, we might look into more formal lessons. In public schools around here, they usually start with recorder in 4th grade. Then a band instrument and/or choir are started in 5th grade. Some kids don't do either.
Guest
I did not have chorus available in any of my k-8 years. It put me so far behind I couldnt join in 9th. Beginning band in 9th was doable, but again, far behind. You dont want to be next to me if its a singing activity...even Row, Row, Your Boat hurts. I did learn enough to keep the beat though! I did make sure my dc had music each year. Edited July 25, 2016 by Heigh Ho
UCF612
My 4th grader has never done anything with music unless you count being in the ensemble of a kid's theater production of High School Musical. He has never expressed any interest in music. My youngest does piano lessons because he wanted to learn. He really wants to learn guitar but we wanted to start him in piano first. He enjoys it. Every kid is different and mine seem to always have opposite interests. Edited July 25, 2016 by UCF612
