justme824 Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 I am curious if anyone has read this and at what age the would recommend. I am not worried about the spooky or violence factor - I know he'd handle that well. I am curious about the mature adult content that might be found. Quote
HomeAgain Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 I believe it's aimed at young adult, so 13-18? I enjoyed it, and so did my teen. Quote
Jean in Newcastle Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 My 14 year old likes it and I think it is just right for her. Quote
AggieMama Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 High school is probably best. My high schoolers loved it. Quote
Jean in Newcastle Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 The reason I think it is better for older ages is not because of "spookiness" or anything sexual but because of complex themes having to do with identity and belonging that I don't think a younger child could really understand. It would be doing the book a disservice, I think. 1 Quote
SanDiegoMom Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 My precocious dd 16 read it in 7th or 8th. She was pretty creeped out. But she's never been a fan of creepy. Dystopian, yes. Mystery, yes. Weird and creepy, pass. 3 Quote
Wabi Sabi Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 My 11 year old loved it, but I do know that there is a Yo Mama joke towards the beginning of the book that mentions someone's mom blowing a trucker. Thankfully, that went right over ds' head. There's also a good deal of cursing. I'm no prude, am not bothered by kids reading about sex, and I have the mouth of a sailor, but that still surprised me a little. It just seemed out of place- like, I couldn't figure out if the author was trying to appeal to: tweens? Teens? Adults? Nevertheless, he enjoyed it so much that I got him the second book upon request when he was done with the first. 1 Quote
justme824 Posted July 25, 2016 Author Posted July 25, 2016 Sorry OP< I totally missed the bit where you said you weren't bothered by spooky. I really need to read posts and not just titles! No worries - I do that all the time too! Quote
justme824 Posted July 25, 2016 Author Posted July 25, 2016 Thank you everyone! I've now read about 3 chapters myself and can see a few words that had me wondering what was the point of using them, and the trucker reference as well. I'm really not loving this new world of YA books and trying to figure out what to hand my DS and what to hold off on. 1 Quote
