Background:

I JUST turned 41, have PCOS and have been feeling awful this week (nausea- got <this close> to throwing up several times/tired - the druggy tired feeling). No other symptoms. No one else is or has been sick. I have not been out in the heat this week.

My last 2 cycles were May 27 (normal-heavy) and June 24th (light, spotty, weird). I ran out of BC pills for a couple months, and finally got a refill (same type/brand/pharmacy) and started taking about 10 days ago. I KNOW I should have waited till after my next cycle, but that could have been MONTHS from now with my PCOS. My cycles were kind of regular due to fasting for Ramadan (happens every year).

So could this be a bad reaction to the BC? I stopped taking them 2 days ago because I felt horrible, but it's not any better. No other changes to my house/day/meds/diet.

To be honest the only thing that makes me feel a bit better is when I am actually nibbling on something salty (ritz, few peanuts, etc) but it returns a few minutes after.

I have been drinking a lot of water due to the heat and thought it might be that (too much water) and cut back. No difference.

I thought maybe it was psychosomatic, but I have been very busy (prepping for school to start Mon, cleaning bookshelves, printing, binding, organizing) so It's not like I am sitting here obsessing. And this is kind of the opposite from a long time ago (7+ years of infertility before DS12) when I hoped I was pg each month.

What could this be? Side effect of Perimenopause?

This is what I need to do I guess... I will get out tomorrow am and maybe can swing by to pick one up.

Silly ? but if I collect some 1st am urine and store it in a covered (disposable) cup could I test it a few hours later do you think???

I have had some nausea, but I am not on BC.  I use progesterone the second half of my cycle to help keep it regular.  There are times during my cycle I feel awful (nausea, moody, ...).  I chalk mine up to fluctuating hormones as I get older.  I am 43.  I think a pregnancy test is a good idea since you haven't been taking your bcp as prescribed, but it could just be hormones changing as you get older.

 Thank you loowit! I am hoping this is what it is. Maybe starting the BC pills "late" set off some hormone deluge that has set my system out of whack.

The endocrinologist said my hormone levels are more likely to regulate as I get older, but I wasn't sure if 41 counted as "older" (I don't feel older yet  :tongue_smilie: ).

A side effect of bcp is nausea.  If you were off them for a few months, your body may take a bit to get used to them again.  Mild weight gain, bloating, and breast tenderness are also side effects.  If your pg test is positive....you have your answer. But if it is negative, then you may be just adjusting to them again.

Definitely possible. I had my last at 42.  Have to say he's such a blessing and the sweetest little guy.

A lot of the newer tests you can take at any time.

Will say an extra prayer for you tonight that the outcome is whatever is best for you and your family. :)

It sounds like early pregnancy symptoms to me but occasionally I have the nausea and salt cravings without pregnancy as well.

It's interesting that fasting resets your cycles with pcos. I suspect this is what I have and extreme dieting or whatever seems to do it for me too.

I agree with everyone above. Take a test.

I am 40. Definitely seeing some changes. This past month i have been extra tired, napping a lot. I am not a napper. Occasional nausea and vomiting. I chalked it up to allergies, but it could be hormonal.

I thought Luna was for sure menopause, though, so definitely better to know for sure.

hormones in perimenopause are whacky the way puberty hormones are whacky.  I also went years of not being able to conceive - and then peri and dudeling reset everything.

My first thought was also pg. the nibbling, etc.

since you went two months with no bc (did you use a backup?) - I would take a pg test.

eta: in my late 30s/early 40s, I would have 'early pg-type symptoms' for a day and a half or so and they'd stop right before my cycle started, but never longer.

Well I always had nausea and cravings on birth control pills and with seasonal allergies. Probably best to check for pregnancy though. Does taking birth control pills mean an over the counter test is inaccurate?

it shouldn't.  pg tests for hcg - only produced during pregnancy, and bc pills don't contain it.

Agree with POAS crowd. Hormonal BCP can cause those symptoms. Mini pill especially is known to cause nausea and breast tenderness. The only other thing I can think of where the nausea abates with eating is acid reflux.

If you run out again, I would test before starting pills if there's been anything happening that could lead to pregnancy.

I am "sensitive" to hormones, meaning that before menopause (past that now), I could easily feel nauseated and not be pregnant. However, since you were off the pill those two months, then I would think the first and easiest thing to do would be to clarify yes or no to pregnancy, then go from there. :)

So, home and grocies unloaded. I did drink like 5 bottles of water while running around this afternoon, but since I got a 2 pack, I went ahead and POAS. Negative. I'll double check with first morning tomorrow am, but I think it would have showed up this afternoon, right?

Thirst was my only early pregnancy symptom....just sayin'

with 2dd .. . is was like REALLY BAD pms.  we  were wanting another, but I was hoping it really was "just" pms.  it lasted until she was weaned.  physically I felt great, had tons of energy . . . . . (she's the energizer bunny, she just keeps going and going and going . . .)

Let us know how the morning test comes out! I will say that when I was on the Pill, I definitely had morning sickness-like nausea. It was so bad I had to keep popping Pepto. An older lady with whom I worked was convinced I was pregnant. Alas, I was not. (I don't take it now due to moral and health concerns.)

I want to say I hope you feel better soon...but, you know, babies are wonderful, too.  :)
