Need fashion accessory advice (colors)

This is for ds's wedding.

I have this dress: https://www.amazon.com/Alex-Evenings-Womens-Sleeves-Triple/dp/B01BWK8PZI/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1469131578&sr=8-17&keywords=alex+evening+dress

(It is not as bright a royal blue as it appears on the website. More toward the navy side of royal blue if that makes sense.)

I have a pair of neutral colored sandals that are sort of bronze. I don't know that they read "metallic" at a distance, but I think they go okay and I am hoping that I won't have to buy new shoes, too.

However, due to the fact that all my hair didn't return after chemo, I always wear hats.

I cannot match the color of the dress--would be a 1 in a 1000 chance I could find something that looked like it was the same color. (I've looked on the internet).

I was thinking I would go with a black hat, but a friend thought that would be a wrong color choice.

She suggested I match shoes and hat. But what color would go with the dress where I could get  shoes that would match a hat? It seems like white shoes white shoes wouldn't really go well. They don't make hats in "nude" and I don't look good in nude anyway, and a hat is right at the face, so it has to be a color I can wear.

ETA: it's a wedding that is during the day, so not super formal if that makes a difference.

Suggestions?

Depending on colors of bridesmaids and flowers, etc, I'd look at a bronze or pewter turban style hat and shoes to match. If you like the shoes you already have, maybe take them to the fabric store to match fabric to make (or have someone make for you) the hat.

I'd ditto the summery style hat. Get one that can take a ribbon around the crown. You're right you probably won't find a hat to match colour, but odds are you can find ribbon in a sewing supply store. If you want to be fancy, you could wrap two ribbons, one picking up the dress, the other your shoes/purse.

I LOVE that dress!! So pretty!

Have you considered a hair piece? I've been stunned at how well made they are. I was looking for a friend and came upon a bunch and was like, when did this happen??

It's become very in to wear extensions -- buns, pony tails, etc. Just a thought.

I love the hat on the far right with a light veil: https://www.google.com/search?q=afternoon+wedding+hat&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiomaysu4XOAhVLNz4KHdGxAYMQsAQILA&biw=1207&bih=539

I think you could DIY a veil with little trouble versus buying a pricey one with a hat.

When is the wedding (which season)?  Lovely dress!

Disclaimer: I'm not a matchy-matchy person. I'm not a fan of the old school "accessories must match" thing so my advice would be to find a hat that accentuates your existing shoe choice rather than matches them.

I like your neutral shoes because I think that makes for a more sophisticated look. I think you have a perfect outfit here to have some fun with the hat. A neutral hat wouldn't be BAD, but this is a rare celebration and a great opportunity to be playful with your look.

I'd keep the jewelry neutral/metallic and simple (e.g., gold and diamonds). I like Caraway's suggestion of a magenta hat, while keeping in mind Seasider's suggestion that the hat keeps in line with the wedding colors. This doesn't mean match the wedding colors necessarily, but to coordinate rather than clash. You can coordinate using basic color theory from art LOL.

If you find a reasonably priced purse in the same color family as your hat, you're set! I'm with your friend in thinking a black hat wouldn't be the best choice if it's a true "cover your head" hat, and not one of those British mini-hat things that look more like elaborate headbands. I wouldn't do white, either. If you're not comfortable going brighter with the hat, I'd look at navy or cream.

Congrats on the upcoming nuptials, very exciting!

Oh seeing it's afternoon causal, you could get a summery style hat with brim - the hat can be a natural tannish color and it will go with dress and shoes you already have.

Do you think that would be okay given that the dress has sequins? Straw would be easiest, but I was thinking straw + sequins was not a good combination.

I appreciate the suggestions! Some other info:

This is not a US wedding, and so bridesmaids are only there b/c my son wanted groomsmen. I think the bridesmaids may be wearing their own dresses not color-coordinated.

I love bright colors and would like the magenta hat. The bride however, likes more muted colors. Mother of the bride is wearing grey, I believe. Bride has said she would prefer that I did not get a red, yellow, or orange dress.

I have looked at hair pieces before and the ones that look natural are $$$. They are also hot and itchy. I don't think I have enough hair to clip on a small hair piece. :(

Love the dress! Your shoe description sounds lovely. I second or third the idea of having some fun with the hat. A coordinating color would be great.

Take the dress and shoes with you when you hat shop....I would not do straw, I don't think anyway. I think a little color would be smashing.

I have a navy blue sheath dress--I wear it with multi-colored sandals (more tasteful than it sounds. :) ) and I wear a deep sagey green straw hat with it...and it works. Classy and casual

Lovely dress. Shoes sound great. Too bad that the bride has requested no orange (my fave color) as it is a complementary color to blue.

If you had a plain hat, perhaps you could add a peacock feather or feathers to it. The blue in the feathers would work well w/ the dress.

Just a quick look-around for some ideas (I have no idea about the aliexpress website; just found it online); there are lots of great hats on this site & on etsy; search for derby hats:

I'd try to get a small hat with a strong shape: like maybe that type that has a swirled stiff brim? Or that type that's a bit like the stereotype of stewardesses in the 40s? Or the styles you see in downton abbey? Or on miss fisher's mysteries?

If try to include more than one colour in the hat, like the body one colour and a band and decor in one or two other colours: but nothing excessively showy (large feathers would be out for me). Maybe grey, burgundy, different blues, black, neutral, etc.

Leave the shoes alone, but maybe get a co-ordinating little purse.

The first hat--the blue and green is gorgeous.  I ADORE the yellow one...and it would look amazing with your blue dress. Yum!  How strongly did the bride feel about yellow????

If the bride already nudged the OP away from a bright dress, I think a blue dress paired with a giant flashy hat might be 'obeying the letter but ignoring the heart' of her request. A bright (or otherwise excessive) hat is much flashier than simply a bright dress. She's worried enough to be pro-active about dress colour... I don't think I'd push it.

(But I might buy a hat I loved to go with this dress for other occasions if my own. I might even plan a few occasions for myself to be worth enjoying in fine style!)

The bride's dress is very lovely and understated, so I can't go with big and bold. :)

I asked about colors of dress for me and she was fine with anything not those 3 colors (mostly because they clash with the maroon red that she likes, I think. Her bouquet might contain that color. I'm not sure.) But I don't want to "stick out" in any way.

There are formal straw hats. Like this:
