Is it possible to get some iteration of HF&M without getting the classic sores?  Like if everyone in the house is sick and some people have the sores and some don't, it's probably all the same thing, right?

Please say yes because we have had some version of summer crud for weeks now and I can't bear the thought of yet another sickness spreading through here.

When my kids came down with it several years ago, my oldest son did not display classic sores. I think he had maybe 1 or 2 sores on his right hand and that was it. He was a bit older than the little ones who had it so I don't know if that played a role in his symptoms. The baby had the worst sores, the toddler less so, and so on. Our doctor definitely diagnosed him as having HF&M, though.

Ugh.  I just need to get out of this den of disease.  All summer someone has been feverish or coughing or something.  The toddler miraculously escaped the worst of it, but got a fever Monday and now has at least one sore in her mouth.  But she's been the last to get sick and none of the other kids got sores, except DS7 had one blister on his hand that I didn't even think was related to his fever/illness.  So when she started getting a sore in her mouth it made me worried that we're all in for another round of illness.  I guess time will tell.

Ouch. I'm sorry.

We had the strain that makes adults sicker than kids a few summers ago. DS and I had it the worst, and it was miserable. He later lost almost all finger and toenails. And we both peeled for weeks [shudder]. Nasty disease.

Hoping you all feel better soon. We've had sickness here since June 22. It's been miserable.

OP - There's a similar illness called herpangina that causes sores/blisters in the back of the mouth, but not on the hands or feet.  Headache and fever lasts several days, sores and swollen tonsils/glands last longer.  It's possible you've had two different strains going through the house.
