Carrie12345
My understanding is that, generally speaking, early hs credit is reserved for math and language sequences. Right? But Financial Literacy is now a graduation requirement in some areas (though not mine.) My 8th grader will be in the 1/2 credit Financial Lit course I'm teaching this year, based on a high school curriculum. It seems like it would be stupid NOT to put it on a transcript. She's also taking French I, Environmental Science, and Human Geography. I have no intentions of trying to push her to AP level work on Environmental Science or Human Geography, but definitely to a college prep level. Since these aren't traditionally CP courses, I'm wondering if it would be viewed negatively to record them as high school credit. But it isn't as if French I isn't going to be at that very same level, and that's supposedly okay! Thoughts?
EKS
I put all high school level work taken in middle school on my son's transcript (so Algebra I, geometry, chemistry, an English course, and a geography course). This is what I said about it in the school profile (that went to colleges): Consistent with [name of local school district] policy, high school courses completed during middle school are identified on the transcript and are given high school credit, and their grades are included in the GPA.
foxbridgeacademy
The main question to answer is "does she need the extra credits?" Do you plan for her to graduate early? Take an easier load later? Take a semester off? If not then there's no purpose to counting the extra credits, IMO. But if you feel like she will compete better for college and scholarships then I'd count them. She definitely won't NEED the credits, but they would provide some extra flexibility down the line. She's taking these courses because of the combination of their availability and the fact that her 9th grade sister is taking most of them. At this point, none of us have visions of or desires for the competitive route, but I would like for her to have a solid transcript as well as room to explore her art and environmental interests. foxbridgeacademy
Do you have to report the courses to anyone right now? I have to report grades to an Umbrella 2X per year so I'm stuck with my decisions but if you don't have to report, then I'd say count them for now and you always have the choice to drop them later. My umbrella would not allow you to count the Financial Lit for H.S.(it's actually required to take but must be in H.S.) but would allow the others with a max of 3 credits. This Umbrella has no issues with students getting into any of the state Universities or Private Colleges as long as they follow the guidelines. If you want to take a look it's called Home Life Academy and the info is under both middle school and High school.
