Big deal or not a big deal?

Recommended Posts

Planning senior year for DS.  He is planning to major in Civil Engineering at state flagship.

Outsourced this year for Comp I, Comp II, Intro to Psych, Architectural Plans & Specs, Residential Construction, Commercial Construction, Intro to Civil Engineering (part of Project Lead the Way.)

He has only had Algebra I and Algebra II and Geometry.  His ACT score for Math was 24. (ETA: Yes, I know he will need to retake the ACT.  We'll schedule it for after College Algebra. His composite was 28. If he hits 30 he'll get the presidential scholarship he's hoping for.  This was taken cold - no prep.) We are outsourcing math this year - I am weak in Algebra II.  He has met the requirements and will take College Algebra and Trig this year which qualifies him to go into Calc I his freshman year.  He is a rock solid student and I have no worries about academic success.  He's had Bio, Chemistry, and will take Physics this year,  German I & II at the CC.

He's competitive outside of academics (Mock & completing his Eagle.)

SO, here's the big question:

When Mock comes, all things that aren't mandated (like CC classes) come to a dead stop.  Mock was the king of our world from January through state competition last year.  Last year he was able to juggle classes and Mock but it was all consuming for him and I expect the same.  This year he is helping to coach middle school Mock.   I am all for this - his soft skills in a leadership role will really be honed when teaching younger kids I think - I see it in Scouts/Trail Life but this will be several times a week and I'm looking forward to seeing him in this role.  This was entirely of his own volition.

THAT SAID, I feel short in "Social Studies."  The University only requires two years of any Social Studies and he has studied Ancient History and Medieval History formally.  (He has always liked biographies and history so he isn't actually gapped here, but it wasn't formal study with writing, etc.) Specifically, he will not have Government or US History on his transcript.

Classes start five weeks from now.  He'll be taking three college classes, Physics lab, and coaching, along with completing his Eagle.  The only space to fit in anything else is essentially within the five weeks.  BUT, he really hasn't had much of a break.  He got done with an engineering internship in early July, flipped straight into detassling season and that will end in two weeks.  I absolutely know he is looking forward to a boring month of nothingness (except ACT prep) for August.  If I ask him to - he will do US History or Government.  But I wonder if I'm not being crazy and demanding to even consider it.

Is this not being on the transcript glaring?

OR, because the U doesn't care/require it for their declared engineering majors do I just let it go?

Or, alternatively, I could do The Great Courses (more passive learning) just assign a couple books, have him write a couple papers, and do a semester's worth of US History between now and the middle of September..  Then during the school year, do a couple more Great Courses/Netflix, assign a bit more reading on government and count his Mock/court hours towards Civics/Government and come up with another semester's worth for Government.

Is admission to the engineering major at the university a sure thing as his transcript stands now? If admissions there is not competitive, I wouldn't worry about it if his plans are firm. Thinkwell does have a US Government course that's pretty simple to implement and can be done on one's own time if you want to put something in there.

I'd be floored if he was denied.

He is a homeschool student but has a transcript through our public district as being part of the homeschool program within the district.  He has outside validation through our CC with an overal GPA of 3.94 and a college course GPA of 3.89.  His ACTs would need to move to 25 overall as a minimum.  The CC does have a pre-engineering program that is directly feeding into the University so that would be his second choice.  He's done two shadows and an internship so he's quite sure of his major and he's a fairly decisive kid.  Granted something weird like the plague hitting could potentially happen to him this year but he's pretty steady.

If you're sure that he's as good as in at the Uni. and you're not trying to get in elsewhere (some Uni's require US History) then I wouldn't worry about it.  If you're feeling like you really HAVE to do it then I would combine US History and Government (could title it that way too) for 1 credit using TGC, documentaries and a very easy text or other book.  The last thing you want to do is overload him and have him mess up (bad grade in a CC class) now that he's almost done.
