LisaKinVA Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) So, our internet (which posts such incredible speeds as 1.5 mbps on a good day, and usually averages around 1 mbps was out for days (it would have been 1 week, today). I had limited use of my MiFi (cellular), until that went out. And, then, I was down to my phone (which means I really can't do anything). After trying for two years to get our internet fixed, and nothing improving, we have started the process to switch providers. Rumor has it that we could have new Fiber service by next week -- with average speeds of 50 mbps! I honestly don't know to even comprehend such speeds (our highest speed back on our street in VA was 5 mbps -- and yes, our street, because if you were one street up (really leave our street, turn left and you were at the very next house had access to internet nearly 10x as fast). It's like winning the lottery. You really hope for just enough to make life a bit easier (you can skype, take online classes, more than one person can use the internet at one time) -- and what you're getting is so far above what you ever hoped for, it's hard to process. Time will tell -- but like I said, I would have been ecstatic with 5 mbps! So even if we only average 25 instead of the maximum of 100 mbps, that's still huge! UPDATE: They hooked up our internet (TIM Fibra) yesterday. Speed Tests coming in at 76mbps for downloads! Uploads at 20mbps! We celebrated last night as dh, dd, the little girls and myself all streamed our own shows or movie (or played an online game) simultaneously. Oh the wonder of the internet! YES! This means I can subscribe to things like Great Courses Plus! It means EDX can be done at home vs. the library on base. It means I have options :D It means I can download music, and download audiobooks, and upload videos and photos for the family. Whoo-Hoo! Edited July 29, 2016 by LisaK in VA is in IT 4 Quote
LisaKinVA Posted July 19, 2016 Author Posted July 19, 2016 This is still in Italy? Good luck! Yes...still Italy. Some friends in the area are getting 50mbps with this provider, so I'm hopeful. 2 Quote

Lanny Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 LisaK that is cool and I hope you enjoy it and I hope we can follow in your shoes, soon. If it is Cable Modem, the speed they quote is a maximum speed. The bandwidth is shared with your neighbors who are also using Internet. But, it is a huge increase that you will enjoy. We live in a Rural subdivision and had 5 Mbps ADSL. Then, the phone company added TV service, and we divorced DirectV Colombia, a company with excellent service, high rates, and a Customer Service staff who repeatedly lied to us on the phone. We have saved a huge amount of money, after our divorce from Directv Colombia. However, the phone company discovered that each TV set (we have 2 receiving their service) takes about 8 Mbps. They reduced our ADSL for Internet to 2 Mbps. If we lived in town, there are other providers, in addition to the phone company, but we don't live there. Hoping and praying soon another provider will spend the money to install the infrastructure here, which I know is costly. This high speed Internet service will be for you like going from Dial Up to ADSL or Cable Modem, years ago. A leap into the 21st century for you and your family! Congratulations and Enjoy! 2 Quote
