MamaSprout Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 We're switching over to Spielvogel for History for Moderns (DC read the third book of History Odyssey on her own, necessitating a new spine.) I ordered an older Spielvogel Western Civ part 2 for cheap off of Amazon, and she likes it (and so do I), although will probably go with the World History instead. What we like- good layout, easy to use chapters and the "Q's" are nice for discussion starters and essay prompts. It's very user friendly. We also like the maps, but that is less relevant to a lit book. :o) Is there a lit equivalent? As a textbook, guide or program? Not a class. Norton? Does this exist? Sequential- (not American, British, World... not sure why that bugs me). Interesting, classical selections Background on authors, etc Some writing prompts and/ or discussion prompts No heavy-handed with the Christian Worldview Thanks! Quote

It has multiple years, that are organized as Intro, American, British and World, but the author encourages users to pick and choose what order they go in and what books you use. So you could definitely turn it into a chronological order. However, it would be more than one year's worth of reading and doesn't contain much if any poetry. I like the old Adventures in Literature books that I used in high school. I have several editions, but prefer the Classic edition. I don't know of a program that spans different sources chronologically. I went with the older anthologies and my own courses, because I didn't find something that suited me. https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-American-Literature-Various/dp/0153351292/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468803549&sr=8-1&keywords=adventures+in+american+literature Quote
rdj2027 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Oh my, I was an exchange student in the US in '84 and that is the book our English class used. I didn't realize I own an American classic. 1 Quote
MamaSprout Posted July 18, 2016 Author Posted July 18, 2016 I do own one of the Excellence in Literature books, and I'll probably use it if I have too. :o) I like the assignments, but a lot of the books wouldn't be my first choice, so I'd be reshuffling and rewriting. I rewrote, revised and rescheduled everything for this year... Looking ahead I'm hoping for something more open and go. Quote

Brad S Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I really like the Norton Anthology of World Literature, Concise Version (second edition is good and far less expensive than latest edition) and you can get the Instructor's Guide too if you'd like. 1 Quote
MamaSprout Posted July 18, 2016 Author Posted July 18, 2016 I do have things on my shelf from older sibs... I'm thinking maybe this for almost open and go: The only things I don't already own are EiL 4 and the Norton World Anthology (which my library has D,E and F): Logic Stage Early Modern Window to the World/ Teaching the Classics with Jill Pike syllabus LS Modern- Lightning Lit Late American w/o Uncle Tom, but add Strength to Love (MLK jr.), Ender's Game and Midsummer's Night's Dream Rh Ancients EiL 5 "World" Units 1-3 with honor books, plus Julius Caesar and a Norton World Poetry Anthology (focus on Eastern Lit) using the directions from EiL for Poetry papers. Rh Middle Ages EiL 4 "British" Units 1-5 and EiL 4 Units 4 & 6 Rh Early Modern LL Early + Uncle Tom from the Late American. EiL British 6&7 and EiL World 7&9 Rh Modern AP Language or Dual Enrollment Quote

I received the TE for Norton today- specifically the one for the volumes a-c of the 6 book set, which has a little thicker paper. I like the TE. I assume most of the teacher materials for Norton will be similar. Good overviews, good discussion questions, and good writing assignments. Notes for what reading to assign. I'm not crazy about the lit picks for volumes d-f, but I think a-c could easily be full lit courses for 9th and 10th. 1 Quote
