Scheduling Lively Latin BB1

It's not straight forward to schedule so I suggest a time - eg 20 minutes of Latin daily to include oral recitation. There's a weekly schedule on her pages for the online classes that you could use if you wanted.

In my opinion, it depends on the child.  My daughter struggles with grammar, so we've taken it slow.  I also wanted dd to see this as a fun subject, so I kept the assignments short.  We also had to factor in a little extra time for the videos.  Putting all that together, I have an overall goal of how much I want to accomplish during the school year, but I make a daily decision of how much dd is capable of that day.

 

Helpful, right?  ;)  Probably not.

It took us about 1½ years. We usually do a full page (both sides) for a lesson. The history parts are longer due to the reading. Memory work (we use Anki for this) happens in addition to the lesson work.

 

We are in the second book, but I think it takes about two weeks for us to finish a lesson. If you have an enthusiastic writer you might be able to move a bit faster.

I scheduled it all out ahead of time, planning for 4 days a week plus 1 day of week that would be only for review.  At our current pace it will take us a little under 2 school years or a little over 1 1/2 years.  My son was in fourth grade when we started and it was a good pace for him.  We also did all the history even though we had covered it with VP history.  He likes it and it changes up some of the days.  I can cut and paste what we did here if that would be helpful as a sample schedule.  I would say our schedule was on the slow and steady side, and like I said after 4 days of my lesson plans every fifth day was a review day.  If we had done 5 days a week of lessons we would have finished much quicker.

I would love to see your schedule, lorisuewho!  My son will be a 5th grader this year (10) and we've already done Getting Started with Latin so I know that some of the first book will be review so that might help us to move through it a bit faster.  We do a 4 day school week so we would probably just skip the day of review that you did on day 5.  I'm trying to be careful not to overwhelm him with too much.  Thanks for all of your help!

One other thing occurred to me. We did GSWL before BBoLL1 also, and I wished I had started our memory work there. The vocabulary would have been nice, but particularly the uses for each case and the endings and such. GSWL uses a different sequence, so when you start BBoLL1 you find tidbits you learned in GSWL spread throughout.

My oldest is going to be starting Big Book 2 in the fall.  I'm working out a schedule now.  I'm planning on BB2 taking us two years.  I'm hoping to get as close as I can to a four day/week schedule but there is a lot more content in BB2.  If anyone needs a sample schedule as a starting point for BB2, let me know and I'll post it when I finish.

My oldest is going to be starting Big Book 2 in the fall.  I'm working out a schedule now.  I'm planning on BB2 taking us two years.  I'm hoping to get as close as I can to a four day/week schedule but there is a lot more content in BB2.  If anyone needs a sample schedule as a starting point for BB2, let me know and I'll post it when I finish.

So I just noticed that my son, who uses this post every day for the Latin schedule, has been posting emoticons several times on this thread.  I'm sorry...you all must have thought I was crazy!  I've changed them to periods because it won't let me delete them (or else I don't know how).  Please excuse his interruption.

dredging this up from the past- do you think it's possible to do book 2 in, say, 15 months? My daughter has been lazing her way through book 1 for way too long and i'd like her finished before she "officially" starts high school. but I also want to be realistic and fair.

So much depends on the priority you have for Latin, your dd's interest level, and how much you want to do during the summer months. 

 

But I say go for it! Worst case, skip the last chapter. One thing to consider would be putting the history pages aside and then do those during school breaks or when she needs a change of pace (or skip them if need be). Another thing that might help would be preloading verb tenses and pronouns to her flash cards since those take longer to memorize.
