dori123 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Looking for a short course or a workbook that focuses only on diagramming sentences. Any recommendations? I have found Drawing Sentences and Rex Barks, but the former is nearly 300 pages and the latter looks a bit outdated. I suppose it would do as a last resort, but I am hoping you all can point me to something better. Any suggestions? I don't want to spend more than a few weeks at most on diagramming. I personally think it's a waste of time but I still want to cover it in case it lights a bulb with the kiddos. TIA!! Quote
Sherry in OH Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 My fifth grader will work through the Elementary Diagraming Worktext this year. 1 Quote
MinivanMom Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Drawing Sentences is a large book, but it's not an overwhelming amount of work. It can be done easily over the course of a year if you only work on it 2 or 3 times a week. If you're just wanting a brief introduction then you could just work through the first section (of 3) to cover the basics of diagramming. That would take about 8-10 weeks for a middle schooler working on it just 3x per week. Quote
HomeAgain Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 We have the First Whole Book Of Diagrams. It's simple, with progressive exercises over the course of the book, with as much or as little practice as needed. Quote
aaplank Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 This website has been helpful for me. I think it might be from the same author of Drawing Sentences. http://www.german-latin-english.com/diagrams.htm 1 Quote
dori123 Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 All good. Nothing has reached out and grabbed me, though. (Maybe it's my bad attitude?!) Keep 'em coming, I appreciate the suggestions. Quote
deerforest Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 My DD really liked Grammar Revolution. It was available from Homeschool Buyer's when we got it. 1 Quote
Tiramisu Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 My fifth grader will work through the Elementary Diagraming Worktext this year. I'm curious if you're doing any grammar along with this. I have the book and I'm on my last kid so I should use it. Quote
Sherry in OH Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I'm curious if you're doing any grammar along with this. I have the book and I'm on my last kid so I should use it. The Elementary Diagramming Worktext and the corresponding chapters in The First Whole Book of Diagrams will be my son’s fifth grade grammar studies. The grammar will be consolidation and review; the diagramming new. Quote
JudoMom Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Check out the offerings at English Grammar Revolution. Quote
dori123 Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 Kinda liking the diagramming at Grammar Revolution. Now waiting for the free booklet to see more... Thanks! Quote
RootAnn Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Doesn't Growing With Grammar have just a Diagramming book? Digging into Diagramming- 41 lessons http://www.growingwithgrammar.com/1DID.html 3 Quote
clemota Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 We started with this book last year and it was very quick and easy: Diagramming Sentences We moved on to Drawing Sentences because DD liked diagramming so much. 2 Quote
dori123 Posted July 16, 2016 Author Posted July 16, 2016 I think I'll check out that Growing with Grammar book. Looks simple and straightforward. Clemota, I looked at Diagramming Sentences and the reviews weren't great. How did you find it? It also looks good, except if there are lots of errors... Quote
Classic Mom Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Digging into Diagramming is very easy to use and focuses solely on diagramming. It takes 1-2 months depending on the child. 2 Quote
clemota Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 dori123 - Sorry, I've been out of town without access to computers. My daughter and I enjoyed Diagramming Sentences, but I will say that we didn't write in the book - we worked out the sentences on a whiteboard. For us, with a solid grammar background and just wanting to try diagramming, it was a good fit. I thought there was enough of each type of sentence for practice. I did notice when sometimes a sentence included a part of speech we hadn't learned to diagram yet (like a prepositional phrase), but we just left that part out. I could see how if you were not strong on grammar it may not be a good fit. This book assumes you're familiar with most parts of speech. 1 Quote
SamanthaCarter Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 (edited) I just bought Step-by-Step Grammar for my 5th grader to have a crash course in diagramming. He's never done it, and I think he will love it, given his nature. Looks like it's going to be good. I'm happy with what I see there, but we haven't used it, so take it with a grain of salt. ETA: it's not exactly a short course. It's a 120 page workbook. I figure it will take us about 12 weeks. Edited August 9, 2016 by SamanthaCarter Quote
Critterfixer Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I downloaded the Glencoe Sentence Diagramming for Middle School, and the Sentence Diagramming for High School. They were free when I got them. Made a nice grammar supplement last year. 1 Quote
