Looking for a short course or a workbook that focuses only on diagramming sentences. Any recommendations? I have found Drawing Sentences and Rex Barks, but the former is nearly 300 pages and the latter looks a bit outdated. I suppose it would do as a last resort, but I am hoping you all can point me to something better.

Any suggestions? I don't want to spend more than a few weeks at most on diagramming. I personally think it's a waste of time but I still want to cover it in case it lights a bulb with the kiddos.

TIA!!

Drawing Sentences is a large book, but it's not an overwhelming amount of work. It can be done easily over the course of a year if you only work on it 2 or 3 times a week. If you're just wanting a brief introduction then you could just work through the first section (of 3) to cover the basics of diagramming. That would take about 8-10 weeks for a middle schooler working on it just 3x per week.

All good. Nothing has reached out and grabbed me, though. (Maybe it's my bad attitude?!) Keep 'em coming, I appreciate the suggestions.

I'm curious if you're doing any grammar along with this.

I have the book and I'm on my last kid so I should use it.

The Elementary Diagramming Worktext and the corresponding chapters in The First Whole Book of Diagrams will be my son’s fifth grade grammar studies.  The grammar will be consolidation and review; the diagramming new.

I think I'll check out that Growing with Grammar book. Looks simple and straightforward. Clemota, I looked at Diagramming Sentences and the reviews weren't great. How did you find it? It also looks good, except if there are lots of errors...

dori123 - Sorry, I've been out of town without access to computers.

My daughter and I enjoyed Diagramming Sentences, but I will say that we didn't write in the book - we worked out the sentences on a whiteboard.  For us, with a solid grammar background and just wanting to try diagramming, it was a good fit.  I thought there was enough of each type of sentence for practice.  I did notice when sometimes a sentence included a part of speech we hadn't learned to diagram yet (like  a prepositional phrase), but we just left that part out.

I could see how if you were not strong on grammar it may not be a good fit.  This book assumes you're familiar with most parts of speech.

I just bought Step-by-Step Grammar for my 5th grader to have a crash course in diagramming. He's never done it, and I think he will love it, given his nature. Looks like it's going to be good. I'm happy with what I see there, but we haven't used it, so take it with a grain of salt.

ETA: it's not exactly a short course. It's a 120 page workbook. I figure it will take us about 12 weeks.

I downloaded the Glencoe Sentence Diagramming for Middle School, and the Sentence Diagramming for High School. They were free when I got them. Made a nice grammar supplement last year.
