Ginevra Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Sandwich type cheese. :) Bonus points if it has melting properties that approximate actual cheese. Quote
EmseB Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Daiya, but sometimes it can be hard to find in anything but shredded. It does melt. 2 Quote
The Girls' Mom Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 My best advice? Skip the cheese. I have yet to find anything palatable. The only thing close is daiya cream cheese, and it is only good with lots of sugar . 5 Quote
Guest Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 My best advice? Skip the cheese. I have yet to find anything palatable. The only thing close is daiya cream cheese, and it is only good with lots of sugar . Yeah, well, that's what I have been doing for the past few years. But I stopped into a sandwich shop Monday, a cute, hipster place on Main Street, and their sandwiches were so innovative. I was able to get a great sandwich on Udi's bread, but it still had dairy cheese on it. The sandwich was awesome, but I can't say my breach of dairy avoidance went unnoticed. Quote
xixstar Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) Daiya my kids will be fine with. Wet and has several options. Roots in Clatksville may have another brand to try too. The Cup in Westminster will serve a gluten-free dairy-free grilled cheese, btw. Edited July 14, 2016 by xixstar Quote
happi duck Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 We like Daiya. It is some sort of sorcery because it seems to be free of everything! 3 Quote
hornblower Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) Oh the vegan cheese haters are out already :p Not to be contrary, but this vegan has found lots of nice cheeses. Daiya makes nice slices http://daiyafoods.com/our-foods/slices/cheddar/ & also a blocks http://daiyafoods.com/our-foods/blocks/ The block is, in the opinion of my omni & cheese loving dad, more convincing and tastes like a mild cheddar. We like it on crackers or in a sandwich. But for grilled cheese, the slices are better. He also liked the Follow Your Heart cheeses. The only reason I default to Daiya is that they're easier to find here. http://followyourheart.com/vegan-cheeseDayia's creme cheese is actually one that I don't buy anymore as nobody likes it. We prefer Tofutti for cream cheese. The best gourmet cheeses are Miyoko's cultured nut cheeses. Pricy - esp for Canucks by the time we pay for exchange and shipping but truly, they're award winning for a reason. Edited July 14, 2016 by hornblower Quote
lmrich Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I agree - skip the cheese. I tried, really tried to like it. It is just unpleasant. I like to add really thin sliced cucumbers to my sandwich and red pepper slices. Quote
snickerplum Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 My daughter loves daiya, but has had a dairy allergy since birth and knows no difference. She's used Tease Cheese and likes it. If I had to go dairy free I would skip cheese. Or, have you tried nutritional yeast? It lends a cheesy-ish flavor. I tell you - morning sickness + the smell of vegan cheese = zofran. Yikes. Quote
helena Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I'm hooked on Follow Your Heart provolone slices. I'm not vegan, but everyone else in my house is. I think this particular brand and flavor is yummy. It's salty and has a distinct taste. Quote
