DawnM Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 My soon to be 11th grader has NO IDEA what he wants to do. We have been talking about various careers and I have been encouraging him to look at some that I think he would do well in, but he still shrugs and says, "I just don't know what I should do." I would l like to get him a GOOD aptitude test, and I don't mind paying some, but I am not interested in paying hundreds of dollars like some of my friends did. We know what he LIKES and we know what he is good at, which are two different things. (he loves theater and music but honestly, he isn't that great at it. He just likes being involved.) He is exceptional in math. Please don't say, "has he looked at X career?" We have researched and discussed individual careers until we are blue in the face. I need him to actually take a test and see that I am not making things up. All the "research this" has been from Mom's suggestions at this point and I think he won't accept it until he sees that HE took the test and the TEST is telling him to research it. Does that make sense? Thanks, Dawn Quote
Guest Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 (edited) Look and see if you can find a local administration of the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. It is free, and it has nothing to do with the military (despite misconceptions). The test consists of a day of aptitude testing plus an interest survey, then a second day of test result interpretation. Each of my older boys have done this test. Going in, none of them had any idea what they wanted to do; coming out, they each knew what they wanted to major in for college. Edited July 13, 2016 by Kinsa Quote

Oh, wait, that is the reg. ASVAB. I will keep looking. Ugh, I can't believe there is no test site near me. Edited July 13, 2016 by DawnM Quote
Guest Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 For other ideas, have you checked the "mother lode" thread pinned in the high school forum? Scroll down a bit to find links about career/aptitude testing: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/475909-transcripts-credits-ncaa-college-applications-first-time-at-college-scholarshipsfinancial-aid-career-explore-past-threads-linked-here/?do=findComment&comment=6516360 Quote

I don't go there that often anymore since I am not HSing a high schooler. Quote

cjzimmer1 Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Ugh, I can't believe there is no test site near me. I did you find where the test sites are? I've looked over the site and I can't figure out how to tell what schools are participating. Quote
