UGH!

I had an interview for a job tomorrow morning.  She just emailed me and asked if we can make it a phone interview.

I just don't feel that it is as good as a face to face interview.  I wonder if they really have someone else in mind at this point but are going through the formality anyway.

Ugh.

I had a phone interview once, it was the only interview I've ever had that I wasn't offered the job.

I meant to say Good Luck!

I used to get offered jobs for every interview.  Then I got old.  Being old sucks.  I no longer get all the jobs, even though I am even MORE qualified than I was when I was young.

Bummer. Let's make the best of it....

When I'm on the phone with a client, I stand up. I've gotten to where I pace when I talk on the phone these days. I think standing up gives my voice more energy.

I also smile when I answer. I'm absolutely certain it changes my voice.

Keep your energy up and really visualize the person on the other end.

Excellent luck!

I've had two phone interviews. One was several years ago, and I used it as a practice run, because I pretty much knew the job was full time and I would only work part time. In preparation, I found a wonderful "how to interview" book with a great section on phone interviews. Following the phone interview, I was invited for an in person interview, and when I confirmed it was for a full time position, I declined. That was an encouragement to me.

My second phone interview was last month. It lasted 30 minutes, and I was later invited in to meet with the team who the applicant would be working with. After that second interview, I was offered the job (and accepted!).

I don't have a great phone voice, so I instead concentrated on being prepared and relaxed, including walking around, as suggested by a PP. I also turned on the fan so I felt like I had privacy, locked myself in my bedroom, laid out my papers on my bed, and had a chair nearby in case I wanted to sit (but I mostly paced). I am older, and phone interviews are a new experience, pretty scary, but I've been pleased with how I've come across. The book I liked so much, Interview Magic, can be found online as a free PDF.

GOOD LUCK!

Depending on the level, it can be fine. It wouldn't be a final interview, but a step on the way.

Dd & Dsil have done them, even at their level and eventually been hired.

This place doesn't do 2nd interviews.  They do one and you either get it or you don't.

I've never had a phone interview. So no wisdom to impart. But good news, bra is optional!!

Seriously though, best of luck Dawn!!

Dd is getting Skype interviews but not phone. Can you say you'll be in town so you'd just as soon come by for the interview? I'd be annoyed. :(

I'd much rather have an in-person interview too.  However, phone interviews and Skype interviews are becoming very common now.  My ds is in the midst of looking for work, and has had several of both.  My dd had both too, while looking for summer jobs.

The MOST annoying thing?  I came BACK from vacation a day early to be here IN PERSON for the interview.  I could have stayed an extra day as we had planned.

She said she is going to be traveling unexpectedly, so she asked if we could change it.

Wonder if she is heading to Disney World.....thinking this is not work related.

Yeah I would've said it was normal until you said it's the one and only interview. I've never hired anyone off of a single interview. I always did a phone interview and then decided who I wanted to meet in person. It was a first step. Interesting. You're going to do great so don't be nervous. I like the yoga pants and walking around while talking advice. :)

Dh has worked through contract agencies for the last 10 years, all of his interviews have been done on the phone, that being said he usually knows someone who knows someone and the work community he is in is fairly small.  Everybody ends up knowing someone that you know.

ETA:  Good luck with your interview

Well, that was interesting.  You really do lose something when it isn't face to face.

But it went well.  I seem to be what they are looking for in a candidate.

I guess we will find out.
