Dianne-TX Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 I'm trying to decide if I'll do this for ds15. He didn't complete Geo. here and this would also be a good intro to AP. Thanks! Quote
Woodland Mist Academy Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 My daughter dropped the class. It felt too much like self-study, which she could do for free. For the first few months the students self-graded essays with guidelines such as this: If you have the word "XYZ" in your answer, count it correct. Seriously. Having one particular word in the answer was the only rubric. On the other hand, assignments like writing about a local park were given actual feedback. It was a strange combo for us and not a good fit. It's one of the more expensive classes at PA Homeschoolers, so comments from the teacher that she didn't have time to answer lots of email were unacceptable to us. It has been a great fit for many students here. It was a terrible fit for mine. Good luck deciding! 3 Quote

That class is $100 more than Maya Inspektor's classes and she gives a ton of feedback, even while delivering a baby! Ds has taken seven classes through them and I would say that five of the teachers were essential to the quality of the classes. The other two, maybe not so much. In hindsight, ds could probably have self-studied for those two. 1 Quote
Woodland Mist Academy Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Thankfully she was taking another PAHS class at the same time, so we knew the lack of meaningful feedback wasn't typical! 1 Quote
cuckoomamma Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 There have been a couple of previous threads that reviewed this course. I stink at searches and end up spending hours reading threads unrelated to what I'm searching for or I would give you the links! My dd took the course and didn't feel that it was overly time consuming or difficult. It was one of her first AP classes. When we picked the class our criteria was that 1) It was an AP 2) It statistically had delivered with high AP scores in the past 3) It was an outside teacher and offered outside verification of dd's abilities (dd had none previously) 4) It was a curriculum she could basically do on her own. I work 6 days a week in addition to homeschooling our two children. I've found that my time is at a premium, and I just can't do what I'd like to do. I've made some errors in choosing curriculum in the past and lost precious time. I felt that I needed to offer dd a class with very good odds of her getting a good score on the AP exam. This class met all our requirements, and dd received a 5. That being said..........dd loved the interaction with some of the other AP teachers who were more involved and would have preferred if all were this involved. I didn't have the confidence or the time to put the class together myself this year. Thanks to reading the threads of those who have, I'm beginning to research teaching my own AP the year after next. I wish I could do it myself but am afraid of failing dd at this point. I'm not afraid of teaching in general, just the APs! Good luck with your decision! 2 Quote

What age/grade would you list as a minimum for the course? Seems like I've heard if some taking it even before high school (13-year old 8th graders). Does this seem reasonable based on your Dd's experience with the course? Quote
